Guest Speaker
Mike Espinoza introduced Mario Martinez, Project Director for Project Worth, San Antonio Metro Health. Mr. Espinoza reminded the SHAC that this would be the 2nd time Mr. Martinez would be presenting because a quorum must be established in order to vote for a recommendation. He urged all SHAC members to stay to vote. Mr. Martinez presented and introduced the DreamSA Campaign. DreamSA is a campaign aimed at helping to reduce teen pregnancy and to help teens reach their dreams by planning for the future. Mr. Martinez introduced and demonstrated the DreamSA website for the SHAC and played a short video clip. The website is dedicated for teens to post their dreams, future aspirations, and goals on the dream board. Mr. Martinez assured the SHAC that all posts were reviewed for appropriateness before they are posted. The website is accessible to parents, and safe for teens to use. Additionally, the website offers information to assist teens in locating a health clinic if needed. Teens may use the health clinic at no costs but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for students 17 years of age and younger. DreamSA is a supplement to Reducing the Risk and It’s Your Game, programs already featured in the middle and high schools. The DreamSA campaign includes the use of posters to promote this program in the middle and high schools. Mr. Martinez requests the SHAC to approve the DreamSA campaign and make the recommendation to the school board. A unanimous vote of the SHAC was taken and 13 voted to recommend DreamSA to the School Board.
Mr. Martinez presented to the SHAC the project summary of programs- It’s Your Game-Keep it Real, and Reducing the Risk Teen Pregnancy Prevention Curriculum Implementation. It’s Your Game results suggest students’ beliefs, intentions and knowledge improved after curriculum implementation. Intentions to abstain from sexual intercourse in the next year and throughout high school increased after curriculum implementation. Knowledge regarding STDs and condoms also increased from pre to posttest. Student feedback of the program showed students liked the group leaders and found the lessons useful. Reducing the Risk results demonstrated a positive change in responses from pre to posttest questions. This indicates that students had a good understanding of the information and the responses demonstrated positive changes in knowledge, attitudes, perceptions and intentions.
