School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Meeting Minutes: December 13, 2016

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) met on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at District Conference Guerra Development Center, 1930 Herbert Lane, San Antonio, TX.

Melissa H. Medellin, Health Services/Wellness Director, acknowledged all in attendance and welcomed the audience. The meeting was called to order at 9:17 am by Abraham Rios, SHAC ViceChairperson and he welcomed all in attendance. Hortencia Delgado, Health Services/Wellness Department Secretary carried out the roll call for the SHAC. She counted SHAC members in attendance and to carry out business and there were five members present.Hortencia Delgado announced to Mr. Rios, the SHAC had a quorum.

MINUTES

There were no minutes to be read from the September 27, 2016 meeting as there were not enough SHAC members to hold a quorum and Mr. Abraham Rios left before the meeting due to a family emergency.

The minutes from the SHAC meeting on May 17, 2016 were read by Mr. Rios. Motion was made by SHAC member Alicia Huerta and motion second by Ms. Moreno to accept the minutes.

Committee Report:

Wellness Policy still in review.

Guest Speaker:

Dr. Emilio Castro EISD Superintendent came into the meeting and introduced himself to the SHAC members and members of the eight components. Spoke on expanding on the role of SHAC by being bold, spear heading and moving forward with the program.

Old and Unfinished Business:

Wellness Policy was brought to the floor. Janice Phelps was asked to elaborate any further information that she may have to add or change to the policy. Ms. Phelps reported that Wellness Policy has already been reviewed and this is how the policy is. Also had other members of SHAC questioning the policy. M. Gutierrez, RN from Methodist Health Care Ministries feels the wording is too vague on the policy. Laura Garza assistant athletic director commented also that the policy had been worked on with Michele Flores RN the previous Health Services and Wellness director and this is the policy. No other members had input and policy was put to a vote. 4 members voted to accept the policy and 1 member voted against. As a rule of the voting majority rules, however Vice Chair Abraham Rios tabled the vote and that it will continue to be discussed at the next SHAC meeting.

New Business:

Election of new officers, as Vice Chairperson Mr. Abraham Rios moves up to Chairperson, Alicia Huerta was nominated for Vice Chairperson and had no opposition and was voted in as vice chairperson. No other parent members in attendance to nominated for vacant positions. Nominations will continue at the next SHAC meeting on March 29, 2017.

Adjournment:

Motion was made by Chairperson to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Alicia Huerta. The meeting was adjourned at 9:48am.
