Our school business included creation of handicraft products out of waste material. These recycled products were categorized under the following heads:-
1. Ready to eat nutritious food - Chocolates, Lemonade, Sprouts, bhelpuri, paapdi
2.Stationary Items – decorative pencils, pencil toppers
3.Best out of waste Products - Greeting cards, Envelopes, Folders, Bookmark, Compost (manure)
4.Fashion Products - Ruffles, Headbands, Tic Tac, Scarves, Rubber Bands, Friendship Bands, Radium Bands, Spring Bands
5.Handicrafts - Earthen Products, Diyas
6. Festive products- Rakhis, Maulis, Karva Chauth Thalis, etc.
7.Compost—Generated from biodegradable waste, gardenorparkwaste, such asgrassorflowercuttings andhedgetrimmings
“Our focus has always been to produce handmade eco-friendly products using waste clothes, old newspapers, dead leaves, vegetables and fruits peel etc.”
This year we are planning to diversify our business by adding new products and sell these products in areas beyond our school locality along with the areas in which we were already selling.
Section D: Our Resources
3.  Considering our school’s physical resources, skills and location, these are the resources available at our school we can use to develop our business:

In our school ,the following procedure of waste management is being adopted
The students are encouraged to put all non –biodegradable wastes like plastic bottles ,leather , aluminum foils etc in the blue bin and the biodegradable wastes like fruit or vegetable peels, their leftover food in the green bin. Even the helping staff, canteen workers, gardeners are also directed to do the same.
MAKING OF MANURE
Once this is done all the organic waste is converted into useful manure with modern tools for compositing such as Rolly- Polly and Mulchy- Bulchy. This is done by our Waste Management Team under the guidance of teachers.

LOCATION: Our school is centrally located; we have shops nearby in our neighbourhood which are willing to sell our products. Thus this will help to expand our market.
Section E: Brainstorming Business Ideas
4.  a) These are the five business ideas we thought of when brainstorming a new idea or a way of diversifying or growing the existing one:
·  Investment from parents----We considered asking the parents to invest in our business
·  Taking loans from banks---We considered taking loans from banks
·  Providing services---We considered performing skits and dances and asking the students to buy tickets for the same
·  Using the available internet services---We considered making use of our Internet services, by utilising our school premises i.e. Computer labs, and hardware system, along with IT Experts involved in SEC to enrol the ladies residing near our school for basic computer learning at nominal change.
·  Gardening and landscape projects i.e. production of manure , herbal plants, selling herbal drinks and saplings
·  Recycling of e-waste, by collecting and sending e-waste collected to recycling centres like Nokia centres and other telecommunications shops.
·  Making Decorative Handmade Products, utilising the waste products (shoe boxes, old chart papers, etc) to prepare decorative items like wall hangings, bird feeders, diyas, mobile pouch, etc.
·  Skin Care Products, made by utilizing herbal plants from our school garden for making face packs, aloevera gel, lip balms , etc .
At Gyan Mandir Public School, the students are taught that,
·  Waste management is important because improper waste management is a threat to health, safety and economic problems.
·  Awareness is created in them about the fact that all living organisms create waste, but humans create far more waste than other species.
·  To prevent damaging the Earth’s ecosystems and maintain a high quality of life for the planet’s inhabitants, humans must manage and store their waste efficiently and safely.
MAKING THINGS OUT OF WASTE
b) The business we chose for our Silver Award is: GIGO - GARBAGE IN GOLD OUT AND PROMOTING HERBAL PRODUCTS
Turning green waste into manure and making decorative gift items (mainly from waste material and e-waste)
Gardening projects and Decorative handmade items
And these are 3 reasons why we chose this idea:
·  Reason 1- Since we had already made manure last year by using green waste from our school campus and we had already made profits by selling manure during open day, P.T.A meetings. We thought of expanding the business by collecting green waste from nearby households, street vendors and vegetable sellers of our locality.

·  Reason 2 -It will help to develop craft skill in students which can be helpful for them in their lives later.
·  Reason 3 - Making Gold from Garbage will lead to Self Sustainable waste management System in the school.
IDEA OF DEVELOPING SCHOOL HERBAL GARDEN
We have an herbal garden in our school because we believe that plants have a long and rich history of medicinal use and even in the era of modern medicine, the medicinal plants can be used due to their healing properties. Many species such as Aloevera, turmeric, neem, mint, tulsi etc. are already being planted in the herbal garden.
Now we are planning to take the students to visit the medicinal garden to visit the medicinal garden and they will be familiarized with their common and botanical names.
By doing so the students will understand that Medicinal herbs treat most of the health ailments and work wonders with their juices, extracts, barks, leaves, flowers and sometimes the entire plant. This will develop the skill of concern for nature in the students.
The students will be told that these herbal plants can cure ailments like indigestion, stings, eczema, ulcerative colitis, toothache and many more.
·  Reason 1 - The students will be made to grow and tend to these plants with the help of the School Gardener. Thereby developing the skill of empathy towards the environment in the students. The herbs grown by the students will be sold during the Open day. The students will also be trained to make herbal drinks from these herbs. These too will be sold in the school premises after sometime. We are also planning to sell these herbal drinks in the school canteen after we are able to generate some funds, which will reduce their dependency on colas and other aerated drinks. This will help to develop the skill of Team Spirit in them.
·  Reason 2 - The students will also be encouraged to grow these herbs at home also. The students will be told that the medicine made from herbs have no or fewer side effects due to a balance of naturally occurring ingredients whereas the common medicines or drugs that they or their parents consume is a synthesized copy of chemical components. The herbs grown in the school will be provided as gift items for guest and others.
·  Reason 3 - We will also initiate the SEED BANK PROJECT through which we will provide seeds to distant places as we believe that by word of mouth the customers will buy them. This will develop entrepreneurial skills in the students. The students will be encouraged to package these seeds and will then be taken to the nearby shops to be sold by them thereby developing their marketing skills.
5.  Our final Business Idea will be sustainable and have a positive impact on the environment and our community because:
·  ENVIRONMENT
i) Products will be made by reusing and recycling waste which will benefit the planet to be cleaner and greener (including e-waste).
ii) It will help in waste management and making the school “zero garbage”.
iii) The idea of growing herbs at home will provide fresh air in their homes and also will help in greening the area.
·  COMMUNITY
i) Production of the recycled products will be handed over to the Economically Weaker Sections of the society who will sell and earn money by generating employment.
ii) In our school 25% of the students belong to economically weaker section that are not able to meet their needs on the daily basis and our school provide them with free education yet empowering them with the skills like artistic, business marketing skills to brighten their future that will encourage them to go in bright skill oriented careers introduced by our PM Narendra Modi.
iii) Some part of our profit generated we will be distributed to NGOs like Goonj and MCD schools.
iv) Once our school herbal garden starts producing good quality of herbs, our school will serve as a NODAL HERBAL CENTRE for other schools. Through this endeavor the skills of interacting with the community will be developed in the students.
Section F: Financing our growth and development
6.  Here is a description of how we are planning to finance our business, including how we are going to raise the money needed for our school business.
1. We are planning to include the students of all the classes in the venture. We will ask all the students to bring at least 5 old newspapers from home. We will then sell these newspapers and use that money also.
2. Initially we are planning to collect biodegradable waste, green waste from within the school, from street vendors, vegetable sellers as well as the nearby houses. All these will be put in vermin-composting pit. We will make compost, package them ourselves and sell it on PTA meeting, in the locality.
3. Another idea we are working upon is that of collecting E waste from students and making useful things like toy cars from damaged batteries, motor, etc to be sold in market. We are also thinking about collecting e waste and handing it to companies like NOKIA who have promised to give us cash incentive if we collect large amounts of e waste.
4. A team of 50 students will be formed. They will be responsible for collecting waste materials from classes, Art and Craft Room, School Tailoring Shop, Maths Activity Room etc. These waste materials like left over glaze papers, mirrors, velvet papers and newspapers will be used for making pencil toppers, mobile covers, envelopes etc.
5. We will be involving mothers of our school students who will take initiative with us and help to make mobile covers, pouches, pencil toppers, envelopes, file covers, etc. by using old clothes and other stationery waste.
6. Selling herbal drinks produced at our own herbal garden at open days and in our school canteen which will be cost effective.
