  1. Introduction – Mr. Darryl Wilson (SAC Secretary), warmly welcomed faculty members, parents’ old and new, back for another School Advisory Council meeting.

Members present included: Mary Lofy, Andrea Davis, Catherine Minnis, Keith Lindsey, Sharon Simmons, Alisa Rodgers, and Darryl Wilson.

Note: Mr. Darryl Wilson gave a motion to start the meeting at 5:30pm. Quorum was established.

  1. Principal’s Report – Ms. Moreau shared that Saturday writing camps end on April 1st. Subsequently, Saturday Reading and Math camps for grades 3-5 have started successfully. Our students seem enthusiastic about taking the FSA test. She also stated, “Camp enrollment continues to increase.” Saturday camp is designed to give MLK’s 3-5 students extra preparation for FSA testing.
  1. #Solid7 Non-Profit Organization- Presented a presentation on Read Aloud strategies. The Chair and President of Black Child Development Incorporation (BCDI) Mrs. Catherine Minnis and Frederica Dixon introduced Solid7. The Solid7 organization offers resources to help develop community. They provided statistics for why reading aloud(s) are important. They stress that children should read for 20 minutes a day at home. The organization provided a list of Multicultural Literature book options. Solid7 also talked about the importance of having a Family Reading Night at home. The organization also shared the websiteParenttoolkit.comwith the committee which provides tips to support children at every grade level. Solid7 also gave out a parent guide that highlighted reading strategies for parents to use at home.

Dr. Proctor President of North Broward College went over Career Exploration Tools. She discussed how technology provides information. She stressed knowledge is power. She also talked about pathways to career goals. She showed a career coach assessment tool for self-awareness. This was a very lighting experience.

  1. School Improvement Plan (SIP) – Mr. Wilson stated that the school has completed the Mid-Year Reflection for the SIP. MLK’s support staff provided input and helped set goals for the following year. Parents provided input to the plan as well. We are currently waiting for the district to review and approved the plan.
  1. Title I – Mr. Lindsey stated that the 2016-2017 Annual Title I Parent Survey is now on the school’s website. He informed the committee that letters went home a few weeks ago to inform parents of the survey. He also stated that if a parent does not know their child’s student ID number (06#) they should call the school for assistance. Parents have until March 31st to complete the survey.
  1. Testing Information – Mr. Wilson went over the testing schedule for FSA.

4th & 5th Grade FSA Writing will take place on Feb. 28th.

3rd, 4th, & 5th FSA Math (Computer Based) - will be administrated April 18rd.

3rd ELA FSA (Paper based) - March 28th and March 29th

4th ELA FSA (Computer based) - April 17th (Early Testing Mandate)

5th ELA FSA (Computer based) - April 25th and April 26th (Tentative)

5th Science FSA (Paper based) - May 2nd and May 3rd
