Reporting to:Judith Greenfield, Technical Manager

Purpose of the New Role:

To providetechnical support to the Gene Regulation and RNA Biology Research group to enable and ensure the safe and effective operation of research and laboratory activities. The role will be based in the Psychology Building but will also undertake work in the Boots Science Building.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Routine preparation and maintenance of stocks of sterile research solutions as required including yeast and bacterial culture media, cell culture media and reagents, specialist RNAse free solutions, and electrophoresis buffers. This requires following precise methods and protocols to ensure the group is provided with sufficient supplies for them to continue their work. Operation of an autoclave for sterilisation of media, buffers, glassware, tips or other consumables and to ensure all the waste products produced by the group are decontaminated before correct disposal in line with School and University policies. / 40%
2 / Provide a glass washing service to the group to ensure glassware is properly cleaned to a high standard. This includes both RNAse free protocols and detergent free glassware for yeast, and requires the use of dedicated washing machine(s), dryers etc. Sterilisation of glassware and other itemswhere required. / 25%
3. / Collection of deliveries, checking off against the relevant paperwork, and delivering to the end user.
Complying with storage and health and safety procedures. This will include collection of goods from another building using the School van. / 20%
4. / General cleaning of benches in research laboratories, including laminar flow and category II cabinets, sinks, incubators, shelves and equipment, on a weekly rota to ensure GLP is maintained. Routine emptying of bins and autoclaving waste ensuring the correct disposal route. Defrosting of fridges and freezers when necessary. / 10%
5. / Monitor levels of liquid nitrogen in the cell banks, and top up when necessary. Provide dry ice stocks as required.
Delivery of gas cylinders to the laboratories as and when required. / 3%
6. / Provide cover for other Level 1 Pharmacy technicians in times of absence. / 2%
7. / Any other duties appropriate to the role and level.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / A good general standard of education, including GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
Skills/Training / Basic understanding of health and safety regulations and procedures.
Good organisational skills.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Flexibility and accuracy with attention to detail.
Clean driving license.
Ability to lift and move objects as this role will involve storing and moving consumables and equipment. / Basic IT skills.
Positive attitude to work.
First Aid Certificate.
Understanding of Good Laboratory Practice.
Experience / Previous work experience in a relevant role. / Experience of working within aresearch or educational environment.
Experience of handling liquid nitrogen dewars and heavy gas cylinders.

Decision Making

i)taken independently by the role holder

Prioritise own work load, depending on the needs of the research groups.
Monitor, maintain and replenish stock levels of media, buffers, glassware and consumable items.

ii)taken in collaboration with others

In response to requests for additional duties, or problems liaise with Technical Manager or senior technician.

iii)referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder
