Activity: Time Management

Grade: 8

School Counseling Program Goal(s) Addressed: By May 20, 2015, 100% of students scoring 810 below on the 2014 Reading and/or Mathematics CRCT will meet academic promotion requirements.

ASCA Student Standards:

A:A2.1Apply time-management and task-management skills

A:A3.1Take responsibility for their actions

A:C1.1Demonstrate the ability to balance school, studies, extracurricular activities, leisure time, and family life

Materials:

  1. Priorities Worksheets
  2. Pencils
  3. Students’ Folders

Procedure:

  1. As an icebreaker, play the Either/Or Game with group members. Read the following statements aloud and indicate an area of the room that represents each side. Have students move to the area that best represents their opinion. Feel free to ask students if they’d like to contribute an “either/or” statement.

Chickfila or Zaxbys?

Pepsi or Coke?

iPhone or Galaxy?

iPad or Kindle?

Summer or Winter?

Football or Soccer?

Pizza or Nachos?

  1. Review organization by asking the following questions and reminding students of support opportunities available to them:

Most important tool?

What’s one thing you’re working on?

Tuesdays, 8:20, PL help

  1. Time Management discussion led by School Counselor

Ask students: “How many of you feel like sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day?”

Remind students that we’ve already discussed several time management strategies (setting a daily afternoon/evening schedule which allows 70 minutes for homework, breaking work into smaller tasks, taking breaks, and setting a time and place to complete work).

Define the words important and urgent.

  • Important: necessary, of great value, having significance
  • Urgent: calling for immediate action or attention, time sensitive

Explain that students should give activities that are important and urgent top priority.

Explain to students how to complete the “Priorities Handout.” Allow 5-10 minutes for students to do so and then discuss their answers as a group. Encourage to take this handout with them and place it in a highly visible area at home to help them structure their time throughout the week.

Process Data: The School Counselor will keep track of attendance using an Excel Spreadsheet. Ideal group size would be 6-8 students.

Perception Data: The School Counselor will distribute a pre-and post-evaluation to demonstrate students’ increase in knowledge over the course of the group. The pre-evaluation will be taken during the first group session and the post-evaluation will be taken during the last group session.

Outcome Data: The School Counselor will review group members’ grades at the end of the first and second semesters to determine if students are on track for promotion.

Follow-Up: Once the group has concluded the School Counselor will follow-up with group members through individual counseling sessions to monitor grades and encourage continued academic success. The School Counselor will also attend Kid Talks, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and/or Student Support Team meetings for group members as needed.
