School Companies / Entrepreneurship Education

In its Entrepreneurship Education Call for Proposals (2012/C 22/06), the Institute for Economic Education [non-profit private limited company] (IÖB) would like to draw upon your expertise. The IÖB is searching for an appropriate consortium or a sponsoring body for this purpose.

Who we are and what we do

The Institute for Economic Education [non-profit private limited company] (IÖB) is an affiliated institute of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, employing around 35 people in the areas of further and advanced education and training (qualifications), in-school teaching practice, educational research, research and development as well as international affairs. IÖB’s focus lies in promoting economic education in all forms of schools and all levels of study of general secondary education both in Germany and abroad, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. The IÖB is inextricably interlinked with the Institute for Economic Education at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (IfÖB), which provides University teacher training in Economic Education. Currently, the IfÖB and IÖB are the only institutions within Germany which specialize in Economics Education, providing all-round training with internet-supported teacher training, further and advanced training programs for teachers and practical support for school, all of which is integrated within a comprehensive network of fields: academic research, politics, economics and education. The success of our work is based on the coherent combination of the academic theory and everyday practical application.

What we want

The aim of the proposed project is the promotion of entrepreneurship education among school children. For this purpose, teachers need to develop the necessary methodological-didactic and entrepreneurial competencies. A European project lends itself as an ideal cross-over between pedagogy and didactic-methods as well as intercultural matters.

The primary area of concern is emphasized in the LOS 1 of the call: a) the creation of EU-wide models for primary and secondary school teachers to support them in developing competencies and methods to impart entrepreneurial thinking in various school subjects and in various settings.

Which instruments/contents do we need to support a project application?

The IÖB has developed and delivered numerous school projects and internet-supported teacher training in Economics Education. Other than the academic content, the methodological subject-didactic approaches lie at the core of this training. As a primary subject area, IÖB concerns itself with promoting entrepreneurial thinking. Introducing school companies is one possible idea that integrates entrepreneurial thinking into the school curriculum in a methodological-didactic manner, but one that also fits into the wider organization of the school. In conceiving advanced teacher training courses, we place particular emphasis on the didactic combination between the school companies and the subject itself, so that a lasting and permanent balance between theory and practice can be achieved. A fundamental argument for this particular approach is the action-oriented learning that is generated within school companies, effectively supporting social and methodological competencies as well as self-driven learning. Students can acquire economic skills and knowledge regarding company-internal processes as well as an understanding about a company’s position within the wider structure of the economy.
