INTERVENTION (TUTORING):

All students will have a 35-minute time period, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for tutoring. It is the expectation of all students to have the responsibility to sign him/her for tutoring.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

Due dates for assignments are on a rotation by class period. Notebook checks will be given weekly on the assigned day. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment during the Intervention period to make-up work Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Students are allowed one day for each excused absence to turn in work for full credit. Missed work due to unexcused absences may be turned in for partial credit when completed during the Intervention period. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS COURSE, LABS CANNOT BE MADE UP. IF AN ABSENCE WILL OCCUR DURING A LAB DAY, THE STUDENT MUST COMMUNICATE WITH ME HOW HE/SHE WILL EARN CREDIT BEFORE THE ABSENCE.

Attendance/Tardy Policy:

Definitions:

“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

Expectation: This is an Honors-level laboratory course. Student success depends upon daily attendance. District attendance policies will be followed. PhoenixUnion High School District believes that daily participation in classroom instruction activities is essential to earning credit in every course.Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted.

Expectation for Promptness: Students who are tardy are expected to sign in once they arrive and present a pass. Unexcused and/or frequent tardies may result in START or lunch/afterschool detention, parent contact, and/or a referral to the Office of Student Services. TARDIES ON A LAB DAY MAY RESULT IN THE REMOVAL OF PARTICIPATION FROM THE LAB ACTIVITY, RESULTING IN A REDUCTION OF THE LAB PRACTICAL GRADE.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

This is an Honors-level course designed for future medical professionals. Students are expected to behave in a manner that is Respectful, Honest, Responsible, Focused and Scholarly.

Students have the opportunity to demonstrate excellence and ear PBIS “bucks”. The “bucks” may be turned into the 100 building Student Store for incentives.

Students who demonstrate inappropriate behavior will be asked to leave for a time-out period to another classroom. Any work missed during the time-out will need to be made up, and it is the responsibility of the student to schedule an appointment during the Intervention period.

IF FOR ANY REASON A STUDENT IS ASKED TO LEAVE DURING A LAB OR EXAM FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR, THE STUDENT WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE LAB.

LABORATORY ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS:

The laboratory activities will be scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the exception of Late Start Wednesdays, holidays or School/District sponsored events. Lab days may change based on availability of specimens. Students will be given one week advanced notice of when labs will be held so that they are in attendance. Assessmentswill be based on lecture material studied in the interactive notebook, class activities and lab practicals.

LAB SAFETY AND PROCEDURES:

Students may not participate in any lab activities until a Safety Contract is signed by a parent/guardian and the student. Students will conduct themselves with a distinguished level of integrity, respect, and responsibility, and comply with all safety rules and expectations at all times. Protective gear (aprons, gloves and/or goggles) must be worn when directed to do so. Failure to comply with safety expectations will result in failure of lab practical and suggested course re-assignment.

DISSECTION OF PRESERVED AND FRESH SPECIMENS**:

In order to provide a hands-on inquiry-based experience to be expected in careers within the medical field, students are required to participate in dissection. Some of the expected dissection labs are as follows:

1st Semester:

  • Cross-section of fresh cow femur
  • Fresh chicken feet
  • Cow eye
  • Preserved bull frog

2nd Semester

  • Preserved sheep heart
  • Preserved fetal pig
  • Cat

**Dissection specimens may change based on availability.

FIELD TRIP EXPERIENCES

There will be at least one field trip scheduled during the school year. More information will be given within one month prior to the field trip. A parent-signed permission slip is REQUIRED two weeks prior to the field trip.

Student Safety Contract
