School Age Team Information Sheet
Our Team
The Dublin South School Age Team provides family-centred supports for school aged children with developmental concerns. Children between the age of 5 and 18 years who are living in the Dublin South HSE catchment area can be referred to our service.
Our team includes:
- Clinical/ Educational Psychology
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech and Language Therapy
Referrals are made to the School Age Team via children’s services such as HSE Primary Care, the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS), or paediatric hospitals.
Who might benefit from our service?
Children are referred when there are significant concerns about their development in two or more areas of functioning. Examples include:
- Speech and language difficulties
- Gross and fine motor difficulties
- Difficulties making friends and managing feelings
- Difficulty learning new tasks
We work with families and schools to help assist children in developing new skills. Children who attend our service are in a mainstream class in mainstream school.
What services do we provide?
We offer a range of supports and services to the children and families attending our team. These inputs include:
- Individualised assessments of a child’s strengths and needs
- Individual and group intervention sessions for children
- Individual support sessions for parents
- School talks and parent education sessions
As well as providing appointments at our clinic, we may also offer home or school based sessions depending on a child and family’s particular needs.
What will happen next?
Parents and teachers will be asked to complete questionnaires in relation to your child’s strengths and difficulties. This information helps us to decide what supports and services might best meet your child’s needs. Once we receive and review questionnaires children may be placed on our waiting list. Therefore we would ask that questionnaires are returned to the School Age Team as promptly as possible.
On reaching the top of our waiting list, we will organise a classroom observation session and a meeting with you and your child. At this point we may carry out formal and informal multidisciplinary assessments. These will inform recommendations for supports for your child at home and in school.
