SAC Minutes May 14, 2015

2:20-2:25

Welcome and Minutes

Dr. Berlinger welcomed the participants. She informed the participants that this is the last SAC meeting.

Participants were asked to review last week’s minutes and a motion was made to accept the minutes by Ms. Ryan and seconded by Mrs. Bernstein.

2:25-3:00

Mrs. Hessberger

1.  We discussed some Title I documents and plans. We are reviewing some of the information discussed in prior meetings.

2.  The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have an equitable and fair opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach, at minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessment. Schools with large concentration of low-income student, those with 50% or more of students who qualify and fill out the form for free and reduced lunch are labeled at Title I school.

3.  Mrs. Hessberger explained the Parent Involvement Plan. All the different activities throughout the year related to Title I were discussed.

4.  Mrs. Hessberger introduced the School-Parent Compact 2014-2015. Copies of the document were handed out and explained. The parent’s input was requested and welcomed. Parents were provided with an opportunity to read over and discuss ideas. Parents asked about the wording in the Compact in regards to interims since not every student gets one. The word “as required” was suggested to be added so that there would be no confusion.

5.  Mrs. Kendrick introduced the Title I Tradewinds School Parent Survey and discussed the results.

6.  Parent Involvement Activities (PIP) –Mrs. Kendrick introduced the document and asked for feedback. Mrs. Stevens asked for clarification on what was considered curriculum night. Mr. Breslaw explained the events that were curriculum night. PTA Family Night included bingo and McDonalds Family Night.

7.  Parents inquired about Science Night, they felt that it was too hectic. Mr. Breslaw explained that they have been trying different things over the years. This year, we had over 500 people come but the R.S.V.P.s were only approximately 180 people.

8.  Dr. Belinger thanked everyone for coming and for their participation. She had to leave at 3:00 but the meeting continued.

Mr. Breslaw’s Principal Report

1.  Mr. Breslaw thanked the participants for being “SAC Superstars” for being here every meeting and contributing so much to the betterment of the school.

2.  163 Thousand dollars come from Title I, most of it is used for teacher salaries, additional funding for professional development, parent training, learning opportunities in the evening for families and students. Our calendar and some of the items that parents receive as communication between the school and home are also provided with Title I funds. It pays for a great deal of beneficial things. We use the Title I money for teacher training, mostly in-house, including the teacher release day that teachers get to spend an entire day planning and the funds pay for the substitutes for those teachers.

3.  Parents asked if because we are an A+ School, we ever loose money that other schools may get. Mr. Breslaw responded that sometimes we do not qualify for other things that some schools who are not A schools qualify. One example is that some schools qualified for money to pay teachers for the FSA camp and we did not. Still, we find a way to provide the students with most of those things with other types of funding.

4.  Parents asked about how many more students can the school accommodate. Mr. Breslaw said we have a large class of 5th graders leaving and we may not get as many kindergarteners.

5.  Motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Mrs. Mannino and seconded by Mrs. Stevens.

Mrs. Hessberger thanked everyone for their participation throughout the year. We hope to see you next year!
