  1. ACADEMIC GOALS

Make note of each academic goal your school has. Provide data to support the identification of this goal.

SITE GOAL / DATA TO SUPPORT IDENTIFICATION OF THIS GOAL
To improve the writing scores at ACP Oakland / Based upon the ACT Explore data and the 2014 AIMS scores Students are not writing to the prompt. We are also using our long term data from last year’s Journey 2020 plan. We want to provide the tools to ensure that students are diving deep into the prompt and taking the time to construct a well thought out essay that clearly address the prompt.
To increase the reading comprehension ability of students at ACP Oakland / We utilized the same data from our first goal. We will have students read and annotate primary sources to use as supporting details in their essay. Annotation will allow students to slow down and focus. When the students slow down and dive deep into what they are reading, the research shows that student, will retain more of what they have read.

II. ACADEMIC ACTION PLAN

CONTENT AREA: Language Arts (However reading is a fundimential component to all subject areas.)
LEARNER-CENTERED PROBLEM (What are your students struggling to learn or do?): Many students at ACP Oakland do not clearly answer the writing prompt.
DATA ANALYSIS (In 1-2 sentences, describe the analysis and the logic that demonstrates the LCP is tackling a root-cause issue that is high leverage?):When we reviewed our AIMS data and ACT Explore data, we found that students do not write to the prompt. The data on both of these tests illustrated that writing was an area that ACP-Oakland students could improve on. In addition writing is an area that all subject areas can focus.
PROBLEM OF PRACTICE (What elements of instruction need to be improved in order to address the learner-centered problem?): Teachers need to model the propper steps that are neededto construct a wellwritten college level essay. Teachers also need to model using a standard set of annotations which can then be used to help write toughtful LEAD paragraphs. In addition teachers will use ABC, Raft, and thinking maps when constructing paragraphs.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT GOAL (SMART GOAL): S: All teachers will provide students the opprotunity to interact with text in a more meaningful way, through the use of annotation. Annotation is a specific stratagey that will allow students to question the text that they are reading, and provide opprotunites to personalize the reading passage to the students. Teachers will also require students to utilize ABC, RAFT, and thinking maps when writing. M:With the traditional long term data not yet avalialbe for us to review, AzMerit, we are hoping that when we preform our long term data that we see 100 percent of our students utilizing annotations, ABC, RAFT, and thinking maps when constructing their writing. Last year we found that the percentages that used these tools differed between grade levels. A: We will utlized our “Academic Lab” and student conference days to provide whole group instruction on using our specific annotation, ABC, RAFT, and thinking maps. In addition we will place specific students in our bottom 25% to smaller academic lab classes to increase indivudalized instruction. R: This goal is realistic because we have procedures in place to ensure that we can deliver a consistant message regarding writing instruction to our students. Teachers understand and have been trained in utilzing RAFT, ABC, annotations, and thinking maps. In addition we have created a team to provide meaningful lessons for academic lab, which is a “non- negotiable” at ACP-Oakland. T: This goal will be otained by the end of the year. Students will be given multiple opprtuines including our two half days, and multiple opprotunities through Academic Lab to be able to demonstrate that they are able to utilize these tools to construct a college level essay.
SPECIFIC AREA OF ALIGNMENT WITH JOURNEY 2020 (What metrics of Journey 2020 is the plan designed to address?):1. Students at all grade levels will surpass state AzMerit Scores in reading and math. 2. Students at all grade levels will score in the top 20 percent of AZ
districts (1,000 or more students per grade level) in reading and math.
FOCUS ON BOTTOM QUARTILE (What specific elements of the plan will improve achievement for the bottom quartile of students in the school?): When sharing data from our LEAD essys teachers will be focusing on all students. However, teachers will only report the bottom 25% so that we can chart those specific students growth over the course of the year. We will also have select students, in our bottom 25% go to a smaller Academic Lab to provide individualized instruction on our strategies.
EVIDENCE-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
List specific instructional strategies tied to your problem of practice. (Do not include related family and community involvement activities here. They appear later in the Action Plan.) / RATIONALE
Why do you believe this strategy will address the learner-centered problem? / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
How will you increase staff capacity to implement this strategy with fidelity? / ASSESS PROGRESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY
1. Fidelity of Implementation: List approaches used by instructional leaders to assure the strategy is implemented (e.g., classroom learning walks, grade level discussions, lesson plan review).
2. Desired Student Outcomes: List specific assessments, assignments and other indicators of student success(Short and Medium-term data sources). / USE AND SUSTAINABILITY OF RESOURCES
How will you align your resources (people, time, dollars, technology, materials, partnerships) to accomplish your goals? / TIMELINE FOR COMPLETION
What is the timeline for completion of the SMART goal?
Annotation Marks, RAFT, ABC, and thinking maps. / It requires students to be actively invovled in the reading. These passages will be key in providing supporting evidence for their essays. Thinking maps will help students organize their thoughts before they take pen to paper. In addition RAFT and ABC provides a clear framework for student to follow when developing their essay. / The leadership team at ACP Oakland will be given time at each staff meeting to review the goals of our plan, as well as time to review approriate uses for our annotation system.
The academic lab team will also develp lessons that will allow teachers and students the opprotunity to see a consistant message no matter which class they are in for academic lab. / 1 Teachers at ACP – Oakland will take three types of data.
Short Term Data (STD) – this data will be done throughout the year. It could be as simple as using any of the strategies in class. This data will not need to be imputed. This data will be analyzed in PLC meetings.
Medium Term Data (MTD)- This data will be taken on our two 1/2 days for conferences. Teachers will input this data into a survey through google forms. Because the form will allow only specific types of data to be loaded, our data will be clean and easily accessible. This way we can easily sort and review the data.
Long Term Data (LTD) – This will be AZ Merit / ACT explore data. Currently we do not know if we will be using ACT explore this year, or when our AZ Merit data will be delivered. We are looking at using the computer based testing for this year. This will help improve the speed at which the data is returned to our staff.
2.Teachers will collect student samples from from their LEAD paragraphs. They will discuss short term at department meetings and PLS’s. Medium term data will be obtained twelve times through out the year. These essyas will be given in content specific classes. / Academic lab is an effective tool that is already in place at ACP. Teachers already embed these key strategies in their classrooms. We will created a “One Pager” that will placed in every room so that every teacher and student can easily be reminded of our common goal. / Teachers should collect short term data each month. This will be discussed at department meetings
Medium data will be take twice per year.
Long term data will be based AzMerit scores and ACT Explore testing (if used.)
Instructional Rounds / Giving teachers the opprotunity to observe other teachers will improve their own practice. It is part of their deliberate paractice goal in iObservation. / Before we go through the Rounds process, we will provide instruction through our staff meetings, and department meetings. /
  1. Rounds will ensure that our strategiesare being taught with fidelity. Rounds will be mandatory for all teachers.
  2. Teachers will share their feedback with their peers to improve instruction. This will be done through iObservation.
/ ACP-Oakland has block days. This means that each week they have prep periods that are twice as long. We will use 30 minutes of their prep on block day to do rounds. / We would like to do three sets of rounds with our teachers. Rounds will take place once during the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd nine weeks. (The forth nine weeks is difficult with the wide range of testing schedules.)

(How will you align your resources (people, time, dollars, technology, materials, and partnerships) to accomplish this goal?)
Medium Term Data (Utilizing our half day conference schedule) / Writing is a key component in the Arizona College and Career Readiness standards ELA standards. Focusing on having each content area utilize research based writing strategies will ensure that the ELA standards are taught across the curriculum. / Medium term data will take place August 18th and February 4th. On our half days. / 6-8 Grade / Leadership team (All team members) / Lead Essays are already used at our site. We have created a set of rubrics that will ensure that all teachers are grading our medium term data consistently.
