Class Updates
In Writing, students began writing their rough draft for their narrative about their favorite memory.
In Reading, we read The Snow Walker. Students compared this book to Anna, Grandpa and the Big Storm which are both about the Blizzard of 1888.
Students went to Music today.
In Math, students recognized that comparisons of two fractions are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole.
In Science, students built their lunch boxes.

Class Updates
Students took the last day of the Reading MSA test.
In Reading, students brainstormed a list of possible headlines for a newspaper article on Kate Shelley. They made sure their titles included the main idea from the book Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express.
In Math, students discussed strategies to used when comparing fractions with like numerators and like denominators.
In Science, students used what they learned about insulators and conductors to design their lunch box. Students will build their lunch boxes on Monday.

Students went to Art today.
In Math, students compared fractions with like numerators.
In Science, students conducted an experiment to determine what would happen if a snowman was wearing a coat. Students used two frozen water bottles. One of the frozen water bottles was placed in a glove. Student measured the temperature every 5 minutes to see how the coat affected the temperature. Students concluded that the glove was an insulator since the temperature of the frozen water bottle decreased.

Class Updates
In Writing, students worked on narrowing their favorite memory. They identified a specific moment from their memory they will write about.
In Reading, we identified the genre of Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express as literary non-fiction since the author wrote a true story based from research. Students asked and answered questions to understand the setting of the story.
In Math, students compared fractions with like numerators.
In Science, students conducted an experiment using a plastic spoon and a metal spoon. The spoons were placed in a cup of hot water. Both spoons had a chocolate chip taped to it. Students recorded observations to see which chocolate chip melted more. Students concluded that the metal spoon was a conductor of heat since the chocolate chip on that spoon melted more.

In Writing, students worked on identifying the five senses of their favorite memory photograph for their next writing assignment.
In Reading, we read Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express. Students used clues in the story to identify the time elements. We discussed the sequential order of events in the story and how the story would have changed if the events had been rearranged.
Students presented their Biography Book Reports. I am so impressed with how creative these projects turned out!

In Reading, students identified the point of view of the two characters in "Shells" by Cynthia Rylant from the William & Mary book Journeys and Destinations. We discussed the different meanings of the word "shell" and how they applied to the story.

In Writing, students prepared for their country research presentations with the first grade.
In Reading, we read the story "Shells" by Cynthia Rylant from the William & Mary book Journeys and Destinations. We completed a literature web identifying important key words, feelings, ideas, images and symbols from the story. Students were able to use this web to determine the main idea of the story.
