Dear Pastor, Superintendents and Youth Leaders,
Enclosed in the packet you will find information pertaining to the 2014 C.O. Jackson Senior Oratorical Contest to be held on June 14, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The host facility is the Enoree River Association Center and Campgrounds; 421 Dallas Drive, Greenville, S. C. 29607
The contest is designed for high school seniors, college freshmen, sophomores and juniors to gain experience in Public Speaking, Biblical Research, and Creative Writing. Students will construct speeches in response to this year’s Theme:

Each oration will be judged by a panel of three or five. The first, second, and third place winner will receive scholarships in the amount of $700, $500, and $300. A participation award of $50.00 will be provided to students not placing in the top three. The winner of the contest will compete in the South Carolina Baptist Congress competition in July. The participant is strongly encouraged to memorize his or her speech.
Please encourage your eligible students to participate. This is an opportunity for each participant to deliver a speech that applies Christian principles to a contemporary social issue. Our desire is for each student to learn more about God and come to know Him in a personal way.
Contestant information form must be mailed on or before June 7, 2014, before the date of the contest. You may contact me if additional information is needed. You may have more than one contestant representing your church.

Guidelines
1. Each church may have one or two contestants.
2. Eligible contestants are 2014 high school graduates, rising college freshmen, rising sophomores, and rising juniors. Persons who have won first place within the last five years are not eligible. The participant is strongly encouraged to memorize his or her speech.
3. Participants are required to prepare and present a three to five minute oration using the theme on the enclosed flyer.
4. The contestant’s speech must show creativity and originality and pertain to the theme of the Congress. The content must be Christian oriented and written to advance the cause of the Christian faith.
5. Each participant should complete the enclosed personal data sheet and return to: Ms. Rosie Miller, PO Box 629, Duncan, and S. C. 29334. All participants MUST submit personal data sheet on or before June 7, 2014.
6. Contestant’s Workshop will be available upon request, if you need assistance. Please contact Ms. Miller at (864) 439-4422. The Martin Webb Learning Center will be available on Saturday, May 31st and Saturday, June 7th from 10:00 am -1:00 pm to work with contestants upon request.
7. Each contestant will be introduced by a number. The contestant should NOT identify himself/herself. Please do not give your church name or locale.
8. There will be no ties. In the event of a tie, the judges will make a final decision.
9. Contestants will be judged in compliance with the South Carolina Congress of Christian Education contestant guidelines.
10. Oration will be presented and judged on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the Enoree River Association Center and Campgrounds; 421 Dallas Drive, Greenville, S.C. Reverend Cory O. Williams is the Congress President. Reception to follow.
11. Contestants are to dress in church attire.
12. The first place winner will receive a $700.00 award and will compete in the 2014 State Congress competition. The second place winner will receive a $500.00 scholarship award. The third place winner will receive a $300.00 scholarship award. These awards will be given upon verification from the registrar’s office of the college that the student attends. All other contestants will receive a $50.00 participant’s award.
13. Please remember: Participants are strongly encouraged to memorize their speech.
