Greetings, Class of 2016! Welcome to the October/November issue of The Senior Scholarship Bulletin, your guide to scholarships and money for college. Each month this newsletter will give you information on scholarship applications that come through the counseling office, plus general financial aid, and HOPE scholarship information. Please remember that this list is not inclusive of all scholarships that are available to you and that more scholarship information is available on the Internet and directly from colleges. Also please be sure to listen during morning announcements for local scholarship applications that may be available in the counseling office throughout the school year.

Scholarship Listing for October/November 2015

  • National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts (NFAA) is accepting applications for their YoungARTS Program. This program recognizes and awards young artists in the following areas: Dance, cinematic arts, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing. Up to $10,000 is available.   • Horatio Alger Association is accepting applications for their Scholarship Program. To qualify, you must be planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation, intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution, be involved in co-curricular and community activities, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and have a critical financial need. You must also be a U.S. citizen. For application and more information, please visit: Deadline: October 25, 2015.
  • Coca-Cola is accepting applications for their scholars program. Applicants will be evaluated on the following: Demonstrated leadership in school, commitment to community, and academic achievement (3.0 GPA). Each year, they award $3.45 million in scholarships. You must apply online at: Deadline: October 31, 2015.
  • Prudential is accepting applications for their 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. If you have made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. All you have to do is visit: click on the “Apply Now” link, and follow the on-screen instructions. Deadline: November 3, 2015.
  • Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Competition. The 2016 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest is open to any high school senior who is a US Citizen. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.   • R&D Systems Scholarship. R&D Systems Scholarship Program will award a $1500 scholarship twice a year to students pursuing a degree in the science related field. Applicant must submit a written statement addressing the following topics: Make a top ten list of why you love science, write a personal statement 500 words or less on how you plan to use your degree to further advance science in your field of interest.   • AXA Achievement Scholarship. The AXA Achievement Scholarship is awarded to one student from each state. Each state winner receives a scholarship award for $10,000. From the pool, of each state winner, ten are selected as national winners and receive an additional $15,000. Applicant must be a current high school senior who plans to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university for the entire 2016-2017 academic year, and demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in school, community or work-related services.   • Foot Locker Scholarship. The Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Program will honor 20 student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, their schools and the community with a $20,000 college scholarship. In order to be eligible, the applicant must be a current high school senior entering a four-year accredited college or university in the Fall of 2016, be currently a member( in good standing) of a high school sports team, and have maintained an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher from 9th grade to first semester of 12th grade.   • The James (Coach) Day Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any high school senior track and field active team member of a school participating in the current Bob Hayes Invitational Track and Field Meet. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must write an essay no more than 250 words describing how your experience in track and field will help you to achieve your career goals. $1000.00 will be awarded to the scholarship winner.   • SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes.Thirty $500 scholarships will be awarded. Open to all high school seniors. Not based on GPA or Financial need. Enter once every 2 weeks, up to 15 times during the sweepstakes period. Two winners randomly chosen every two weeks. The Scholarship Sweepstakes will begin on September 14, 2015.   • American Meteorological Society (AMS) Minority Scholarship.The AMS Minority Scholarships will award funding to minority students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. Scholarship eligibility: applicant must be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status, student must plan to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences (marine biology is not eligible), students eligible to apply for the AMS minority scholarship program may also apply to the AMS Freshman Scholarship Program but can only select one scholarship if selected for both.   • Auburn University is accepting applications for their scholarship program. Several scholarships (Presidential, Heritage and Charter) are available, and each has specific requirements. Please visit: for additional information. Deadline: February 10, 2016.
  • George Washington Carver Scholarship. This scholarship awards grants to students who plan to attend a historically black college or university and major in an area of business, math, science or technology. Awards range from a book scholarship to $10,000. Students must demonstrate leadership ability, and have a minimum 40 hours of volunteer work. For more information, please visit Deadline: May 30, 2016
  • Discover Student Loans Scholarship. Discover is giving away $50,000 in scholarships to high school students now through February 29, 2016. Students are automatically entered to win a $2500 scholarship when they sign up to receive helpful tips on planning and paying for college at collegecovered.com.   • Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. The Voice of Democracy Competition is open to high school students. To enter you must write and record a 3-5 minute broadcast script on the following theme: “My vision for America.” The winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship.   • Ron Brown Scholar Program. The Ron Brown Scholar Program competitively awards a $10,000 renewable scholarship to the most talented and economically-challenged high school African-American seniors. The student must excel academically, must exhibit exceptional leadership potential, must participate in community service activities and must demonstrate a financial need.   • Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is an undergraduate scholarship program available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend and graduate from the nation's best four-year colleges and universities. Selected from a nationwide pool of applicants, up to 40 students will become Jack Kent Cooke Scholars and have access to funding for up to four years for undergraduate studies. Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expense- including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships he or she may receive. At a minimum, applicants must: plan to graduate from a US high school in spring 2016, intend to enroll in an accredited four-year college beginning in fall 2016, earn a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above, SAT combined critical reading and math score of 1200 or above and/or ACT composite score of 26 or above, demonstrate significant unmet financial need.   • Education Matters Scholarship. As a scholarship seeker, you're probably already well-aware of the importance of an education. But, what about the naysayers? Have you come across someone who's tried to talk you out of college, saying that it's not worth it?Education Matters Scholarship is giving you the chance to state why education matters. Why does education matter to you? What is the value you hope to receive from college? What would you do to convince the college cynics?Speaking up for education could lead to helping you pay for your own. One applicant will be awarded a $5,000 Education Matters Scholarship.   • CBT Nuggets Scholarship. CBT Nuggets is committed to empowering the development of learners of all ages - including those currently enrolled in high school, or in their first year of college.Graduating high school seniors or first-year college students are invited to submit application materials for the CBT Nuggets annual scholarship. Students should be interested in mathematics, computer science, engineering, or other fields related to the information technology industry. High school students must have a minimum 3.3 high school GPA to apply and must submit an 800-1600 word essay about an emerging technology and its potential to change the world.   • 2016 Colored Rocks Prize open for male seniors. The prize is awarded annually to 15 senior male high school students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The prize recognizes and awards high achieving male students who have committed to help at least one of their struggling peers achieve their high school diploma.   • Novus Biologicals Scholarship Program. The Novus Biologicals Scholarship Program is awarded to students pursuing a degree in a science related field. A $1500 scholarship will be awarded to one student for the fall and spring semesters. Applicants must beenrolled or accepted for enrollment with a declared major in a science related field and submit a written statement addressing the following topics: a top ten list of your favorite emerging technologies and a personal statement of 500 words or less on how you plan to use your degree to further advance science in your field of interest.   • Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) is accepting applications for their 2015 Scholars Program. This program is for minority students (African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American) who have at least a 3.3 un-weighted GPA and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.   • Daughters of the American Revolution. The DAR awards multiple scholarships to students showing dedication to the pursuit of degrees in diverse disciplines including history, law, nursing, and education. For more information please visit Deadline: February 10, 2016
  • Goizueta Scholarship. The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund award at Georgia State ismade possible by The Goizueta Foundation, established by Roberto C. Goizueta, the late CEO and chairman of the board of directors of The Coca-Cola Company. The scholarship is designed to increase the number of students of Hispanic/Latino origin who enroll and complete their undergraduate degrees at Georgia State and provide mentors, internshipsandcommunity service experiences to these students so that they can become the leaders of the future.Application Deadline: February 15, 2016 .Pleasenote that you should apply for admission to Georgia State no later than February 6 (and preferably much earlier) to allow sufficient time to be admitted to the university. You must be admitted to Georgia State before you can apply for the Goizueta scholarship.
  • Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship. The vegetarian resource group scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors. You must have been active in promoting vegetarianism in your school and/or community; and have demonstrated compassion, courage, and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian diet/lifestyle to be considered for this award.   • Create- a-greeting card scholarship. The create-a-greeting card scholarship is open to high school students. To enter, you must design a holiday, get well or birthday greeting card and submit your work to be judged. The winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship.   • Georgia Press Educational Foundation annually awards scholarships to Georgia residents attending Georgia colleges and universities who are pursuing a career in the field of journalism. For more information please visit Deadline: March 1, 2016
  • Big Sun Scholarship 2016. The Big Sun Organization is proud to be able to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in. For more information please visit Deadline June 17, 2016.
  • Jimmy Rane Foundation Scholarship. The Jimmy Rane Foundation was establishedwiththe purpose of sending deserving students to college. Jimmy Rane Foundation scholars are students who exhibit academic excellence, leadership skills and community involvement as well as activities, awards and honors, and who have a demonstrated financial need in order to attend college.   • 2016 GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program. Created to honor the legacy and character of President Ronald Reagan, this program annually rewards up to 20 college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with $10,000 renewable scholarships (up to $40,000 per recipient).   • Moody’s Mega Math Challenge. Moody's Mega Math Challenge is a mathematical modeling contest for high school students sponsored by The Moody's Foundation and organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The M3Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool, and as a viable and exciting profession. Scholarship prizes total $150,000. Students gain the experience of working in teams to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints akin to those faced by industrial applied mathematicians.   • Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Scholarship. CHCI's scholarship opportunities are afforded to Latino students in the United States who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who demonstrate a desire to continue their civic engagement in the future. There is no GPA or academic major requirement. Students with excellent leadership potential are encouraged to apply.   • Sussle will award a $1,000 scholarship each month to a senior. This is not your usual scholarship. There is no application or essay, and it’s actually fun. Sussle collects the best content by topic. By participating, you will be posting your knowledge for the benefit of others, and in return, the best contributor will win the scholarship.   • Georgia Military Scholarship. The state of Georgia offers 42 scholarships per year to Georgia high school seniors who attend the University of North Georgia and commission as officers in the Georgia Army National Guard after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. The scholarship pays for your room, meals, tuition, books, uniforms, and fees. In addition, you receive National Guard weekend drill pay, GI Bill, pay for attending Army basic and advanced training.   • Georgia Tech offers Georgia Tech Promise Scholarship Programfor students whose parents have less than $33,300 in income. Visit more information.
  • Varsity Tutors Scholarship Contestholds a monthly $1,000 college scholarship contest where students must write an essay in response to a monthly prompt. The top five entries with the most votes are reviewed by Varsity Tutors at the end of the month and one winner is chosen to receive the $1,000 college scholarship.   • The Asian Pacific Fund administers 12 scholarship programs to help students achieve their education goals. To apply for a scholarship administered by the Asian Pacific Fund, please review the complete eligibility criteria for each scholarship program, and download the application for the program(s) for which you are eligible.   • Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The awards process is highly competitive and is given to outstanding and qualified students who plan to earn a baccalaureate, graduate or law degree from an accredited college or university.The average award is $3,100 per student per semester.Most scholarships are one year, non-renewable unless otherwise indicated.
