Computer Disassembly and Assembly

Introduction

In this lab you will disassemble and reassemble your lab workstation.

Part One: Computer Disassembly

Using proper " ESD " precautions, remove the workstation cover. (Figure 4.1.1)
Figure 4.1.1
  1. Remove all ribbon cables, power connectors, switch leads, and LED leads.

Note: Labeling all connectors before removal will help ensure proper reassembly.

  1. Remove the hard drive, CD/DVD drive, and the floppy drive from the system. (Figure 4.1.2)

Figure 4.1.2
  1. Remove all expansion cards from expansion slots by first removing the retaining screws, then applying even upward pressure to the cards.
  2. Remove the system memory modules (RAM) from the system board.
  3. Remove the processor (CPU) from the system board.
  4. Remove the system board from the case. Your workstation is now disassembled. (Figure 4.1.3)
  5. Since there are no questions to fill out have me (the instructor) initial here that I’ve seen your disassembled machine.

Part Two: Computer Reassembly

Note: The reassembly procedure is basically a reversal of the disassembly procedure.

Install the system board into the case.
  1. Install the CPU and RAM onto the system board.
  2. Install the expansion cards into the expansion slots, and secure them with the retaining screws.
  3. Install the hard drive, CD/DVD drive, and the floppy drive into the case.
  4. Install all ribbon cables, power connectors, switch leads, and LED leads.

Note: Pay close attention to the pin-one orientation on the ribbon cables.
  1. Before installing the cover, start the workstation and ensure that it boots properly.
  2. After verifying that the workstation boots properly, and that all components are working, replace the cover.
  3. Again, since there are no questions to fill out have me (the instructor) initial here that I’ve seen your disassembled machine.
