Microsoft Office 2007 must be used for all lab assignments. It is available for use in the FACET Center on the Northeast campus of Tulsa Community College during regular hours. CATALOG DESCRIPTION

This is a theory/applications course. The theory introduces the role of computers in all aspects of global society. The applications segment utilizes Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and the Internet to equip students with basic computer skills necessary for their academic and professional careers. It will serve as the first course to be taken by any computer science major, may satisfy a computer science requirement for another discipline, a university parallel transferable course and meets the computer proficiency requirements mandated by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

Lecture 2 hours/Laboratory 2 hours.

DESCRIPTION

The terminology of computers is presented. A major focus will be the concept of “computer literacy”. The student will do several projects utilizing the major software features of Microsoft Office and the Internet.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

The objective of this course is to give the student a basic exposure to the terminology of computers. Students will learn basic computer applications including: Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Internet searches.

TEACHING METHODS

Classes will consist of lecture, Discussion, and lab assignments. Class-member preparation and participation are a very necessary part of this class. Students will be expected to devote time each week to reading, online quizzes lab work, and discussions. Students are encouraged to ask questions and must participate in discussion topics presented by the instructor.

NOTE: You are responsible to keep up with the schedule, assignments, and exams. It is the student’s responsibility to read, understand and retain this syllabus. It is the student’s responsibility to read everything on the Blackboard site for the course.

Your final grade will be the average of the four test grades, quizzes, and lab assignment grades.

Attendance – TIME commitment – Student Expectations

Attendance regular participation is essential for maintaining the best learning environment. Learning occurs in relationship not only between student and course materials, but, just as importantly, peer to peer, professor to student, and student to professor.

I strongly recommend that you check for new announcements and your email on a daily basis.

Students who successfully complete the course report that they spend an average of 20 hours per week on the course. You may spend more or less, depending on your current level of expertise.

WITHDRAWL from the CLASS

Non-attendance does NOT constitute withdrawal from the class. Students must formally withdraw. The responsibility is yours!

Regular server maintenance is scheduled every Wednesday morning from 12:15 a.m. to 1:15
a.m. Blackboard may be inaccessible for all or part of this time. Please plan accordingly.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY OR MISCONDUCT

Academic dishonesty or misconduct is NOT condoned nor tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Academic dishonesty is behavior in which a deliberately fraudulent misrepresentation is employed in an attempt to gain underserved intellectual credit, either for oneself or for another. Academic misconduct is behavior that results in intellectual advantage obtained by violating specific standard, but without deliberate intent or use of fraudulent means. Access to computing resources is a privilege granted to all TCC faculty, staff, and students. This is a list of your assignments and their due dates. All assignments must be completed and handed in on time. Late work will be accepted only on a case by case basis and exceptional circumstances should be discussed with the instructor in advance. Assignments must be properly identified and each assignment must include: Your name, the assignment and file name in the comment area when you post.

Your work must be your own. Cheating will result in a grade of 0 for the applicable assignment; further disciplinary action, including assigning a failing grade (F) for the entire course may also be taken. Missed work will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment. You are allowed to turn in any assignment early.

There will be no extra given in this class so please do not ask.

Tests must be taken at the NE testing center between dates shown.

Note: No makeup tests. Since I give several days for tests you will need to make arrangements to take test at the NE campus during this time period.
