Scary-Hairy® MyL’Stones® is a powerful learning tool that helps kids succeed, plus it’s fun! Here’s a case showing how Scary-Hairy® can engage a child in personal improvement, enable them with a proven goal setting tool, and energize success through positive reinforcement.
Joey’s a 4th grader at Casco Bay Elementary. He works hard in school, has many friends, enjoys band and really loves sports - especially basketball. Though things are going okay in school, Joey has always struggled a bit with reading. Seems the ‘nightly oral reading’ goal that was discussed at his last conference fell by the wayside. He’s been feeling increasingly frustrated and self-conscious, especially when asked to read aloud in front of the class. Joey’s parents were concerned and really wanted to help. A teacher told them about Scary-Hairy® so they decided to give it a try.
ENGAGE
Joey was excited when the package arrived in the mail and couldn’t wait to get started! Saturday morning, he and his mom sat around the kitchen table, slid open the goal box and emptied out all the contents. It was packed full of wooden pieces, paint, clay, goal cards, achievement journal, and more - all they would need to create a really cool goal tracking system. They followed the step-by-step instructions beginning with painting the wooden pieces. They used all 8 paint pots and the results were magnificent! Next, they unwrapped the blocks of clay, cut them into cubes, and mixed and molded the clay into twelve MyL’Stone masterpieces. Before placing them into the oven to bake, Joey popped open the pot of glitter and sprinkled a little magic on every stone to help give him the courage and stick-to-it-iveness to tackle the really tough goals! Mom took full advantage of this relaxed, one-on-one time to chat with Joey about goal setting, accountability and follow-through.
While they waited for the paint to dry and clay to harden they read through the Guide to Getting Started, an easy read which walked them through the goal setting process. After a few minutes of brainstorming all sorts of goal ideas, Joey selected his first scary hairy goal... ‘To improve his basketball dribbling skills!’ Not what mom had in mind. After some laughter and gentle coaxing, he decided to tackle ‘reading’ first. A few friends from school had been chatting during recess about Lemony Snicket’s, Series of Unfortunate Events. They seemed like fun books, so Joey decided to make them part of his first scary-hairy goal: ‘…to read the entire Lemony Snicket series!’
ENABLE
Joey peeled off a blank goal card and with mom’s help, completed each section. They broke down his scary-hairy goal into smaller, simpler, more manageable steps or MyL’Stones®. Joey drew a picture that illustrated success and then entered the goal number and start date. Both added their signature to the bottom of the card making it ‘official’ - Joey’s commitment to following through on his goal and mom’s commitment to supporting his success!
ENERGIZE
So far, this goal setting thing was a piece of cake. Making the kit was a ‘blast’ and filling out the goal card was fun and easy. Overall, Joey seemed positive about launching his first scary-hairy goal, yet his mom could sense a bit of uneasiness. Given its importance, she decided to sweeten the pot a little to make this challenge really worth his while! (She knew that success on this goal would boost his confidence and lead to more reading goals and continued improvement.) For every book he finished, they’d celebrate with a trip to the ice cream store and then on to the library to pick out the next book in the Lemony Snicket series. Any uneasiness that Joey may have felt was quickly replaced by a ‘bring-it-on, can-do’ kind of attitude. He arranged the new goal tracker on his nightstand, placed 11 MyL’Stones® around the base of his goal post and cracked open MyL’Stone #1, ‘The Bad Beginning!’
Four weeks later Joey finished the first book and slid a MyL’Stone onto the goal post to symbolize success. He finished book #2 in three weeks, #3 in two weeks and the remaining 8 MyL’Stones® made it onto the post before summer break. He told his mom success felt ‘really good’ and he couldn’t wait for the release of books’ 12 and 13 in the Series of Unfortunate Events. A scary-hairy success!
Scary-Hairy® MyL’Stones® is a proven, powerful learning tool, it is nota magic bullet. Success hinges on the commitment of those who are using it, as illustrated in the above example.
In the hands of a child who wants to succeed supported by a caring parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, or friend, Scary-Hairy® can help kids achieve their full potential - tackling big goals, overcoming big challenges, achieving big results… one stone at a time!
