Mission Statement

The Scarborough Model Middle School library media center will empower individuals to become information literate and effective lifelong learners and readers. SMMS media center will provide educational and technological opportunities to students and staff in keeping with their needs and abilities. The program will enable individuals to access, analyze, assimilate, and use information effectively.

Library Hours

7:30 AM-2:25 PM

Accelerated Reader

  • Each student is required to meet an Accelerated Reader goal every quarter.
  • Goals are set by language arts teachers based on Scantron Reading results.
  • To meet their quarterly Accelerated Reader Goal requirements a student must:
  1. Meet their point goal.
  2. Score an average of 85% or better on AR tests.
  3. Read and test on at least 3 books.

Circulation Policy

Students

  • Students may check out two print books for two weeks.
  • Books may be renewed for an additional two weeks if they are not on hold for another patron.
  • Students may get more than two books at the librarian’s discretion if assigned a special project.
  • Students may put a book that is checked out on hold. They will be notified when the book is returned to the library so that they may check it out.
  • Students may not check out DVDs or audiobooks.
  • Students may check out e-books for 14 days.

Faculty

  • Faculty may check out books, audiovisuals, and ebooks for a period of two weeks.
  • Faculty may check out equipment for an extended period of time unless it is needed elsewhere.

Fines

  • There are no overdue fines. However, if a book is lost the patron will owe the full purchase price of the book.
  • Patrons will be fined for damaged books depending on the extent of the damage up to the full purchase price of the book.
  • If a patron owes for a lost or damaged book to SMMS or another school in the district, that patron will only be able to check-out one book until the debt is cleared.
  • All patrons are instructed to check materials for damage before checking out and report damage to the librarian to avoid being held responsible.

Library Procedures

  • Students will use their student ID as a library card. If the card is lost, students must buy a new card at a cost of $5.00 to check out books.

  • Students will visit the library once every two weeks with their language arts teachers. They may visit the library at other times with a hall pass.
  • Students will use self check-in for their library books. They will scan the barcode on the front of the library book into the circulation computer. Students must make sure the book title appears on the screen to guarantee that the book checked-in correctly.

Library Rules

  • Speak quietly and be respectful in the library.
  • Any student without a pass will be sent back to class immediately to receive a pass from their teacher.
  • Students coming in with a pass must sign in and out.
  • Any student with gum or food in the library may be refused service and asked to return to class.
  • School computers can be used for Accelerated Reader, educational research, and digital projects. All computer usage must be educational. Any student who is on the revoked technology permission list will not be allowed to use library computers.
  • During dedicated Accelerated Reader time in the morning (7:30-8:30), computers will not be available for research. They will be reserved for AR usage only.

The media specialist will alter her lunch time to fit scheduled classes.

A monthly calendar will be in the library for teachers who wish to sign-up for research skills instruction or special projects.
