The Application

Each student must submit the following information to complete this application:

  • Junior Giants Scholars application form (attached), which includes a recommendation from your Junior Giants Coach or Commissioner (this may not be submitted by your parent or guardian)
  • One recommendation from an adult (teacher, community member, coach, etc.) other than a parent/guardian who can confirm your community involvement, teamwork and leadership qualities, and/or academic achievement (Please use attached form)
  • One photocopy of your year-end seventh grade report card

The Program

The mission of the Junior Giants Scholars program is to provide an incentive for higher education, promote active community service, and extend the impact of the Junior Giants baseball program. Emphasizing the importance of Confidence, Teamwork, Leadership, and Integrity, Junior Giants furthers its commitment to the community through this unique scholarship. The goal of this program is to provide students with the incentive and motivation to actualize their full potential.

Of important note to potential applicants:
  • The goal of this program is to assist students who have high potential but may be under-achieving, enabling them to flourish and become motivated and successful.
  • There will be special consideration of Scholars who exhibit extraordinary improvement.
  • We value diversity and will strive to have that diversity, in all its manifestations, reflected in the Junior Giants Scholars program.
  • We are committed to making an impact on the communities we serve, and we particularly encourage students who display exceptional character to apply for this scholarship.

The Scholarship

A $2,500 Scholarship will be awarded to ten students who will be in eighth grade in the current academic year and are currently participating in the Junior Giants baseball program. The Junior Giants Scholars program is open to all current seventh grade participants in Junior Giants baseball. All eligible participants within the over 80 regional leagues are encouraged to apply for this award.

Each recipient will be recognized on Education Night during the on-field presentation at AT&TPark and will be invited to participate in that annual celebration.

The Criteria for Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, each student must:

  • Currently participate in the Junior Giants program
  • Enter eighth grade in Fall 2009
  • Demonstrate the value of education, a strong work ethic, and community outreach
  • Be a legal resident
  • Have a 2.0 grade point average on a four-point scale

The Recipients

Scholarship recipients must meet the following requirements each year, grades 8-12:

  • Maintain involvement with Junior Giants as a coach/mentor or participate in another community volunteer program with a minimum of 30 hours of service each year
  • Maintain satisfactory high school attendance
  • Maintain an annual minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a four-point scale*

*Must annually provide documentation to confirm this requirement is met

The Selection

Junior Giants Scholars are selected by a committee comprised of Board members and staff of the Giants Community Fund. The committee reviews the completed applications and the students’ community and academic achievements. Decisions of the committee are final. Applications become property of the committee and will not be returned.

There will be no discrimination regardless of race, color, creed, sex, religion, marital status, age, national origin or ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, or sexual orientation when choosing a successful scholarship recipient. Immediate family members of the Giants front office and Giants Community Fund Board of Directors are not eligible for consideration of a scholarship.
