Competition SOP
All drill team members must be enrolled in JROTC or have earned credit for JROTC during the current school year (programs that are on block scheduling).
Elements/ Squads, with commander, will consist of 7 members and not more than 11 members. Commanders will carry the same equipment as their unit.
Flights/ Platoons will consist of no fewer than 13 members – Team commanders and four elements/ squads of four cadets. Commanders will carry the same equipment as their units.
Colorguards will consist of four members with two flags or five members with three flags and are required to use rifles. Pistols are not authorized for use during the competition.
Timed events will begin when the first member enters the designated area and time will stop when the last member leaves the area.
All regulation and Colorguard events will be performed at 120 steps per minute and each cadet will march using a 30-inch step. Drill movements not performed to this standard will be evaluated as not meeting the basic standard and judges’ scoring will reflect this with a lower score.
Scoring:
Quality points will be used to determine the overall standings of the competition. Points are awarded based on finish position and number of positions to receive recognition.
1st– 5 Points
2nd – 4 Points
3rd – 3 Points
4th – 2 Points
Participating in event 1 Point
Quality points will be earned in each event excluding Knockout.
Ties for a drill team will be resolved by calculating total points earned by a school in all the drill team’s events.
If a score sheet reaches the scoring room without a score for a command, the following procedure will be used:
First, the score from the other judge’s score sheet will be used. If neither judge marks a score for a command a max possible score for that command will be awarded.
Appearance:
Cadets will display proper military bearing and respect at all times.
Penalties:
Unsportsmanlike conduct by either team members or advisors will receive a maximum penalty of disqualification for that event. The Drill Meet Officer will determine the severity of the infraction and may assess penalties up to the maximum.
Any school advisor or team member approaching a judge with the apparent intent to influence the meet, or who enters the drill area without permission will cause their team to be immediately disqualified in that event.
Precision time limits are stated in this SOP. Penalty points will be assessed at 1 point for each five seconds under or over the stated limitations.
Tardiness in reporting to the ready area will result in disqualification if caused by the team.
Failure to stay within the predetermined area will result in an assessment of 10 penalty points per separate occurrence (the team goes out of bounds and comes back in that’s one. If it happens again, that is number two and an additional 10 point penalty)
A dropped rifle will result in an assessment of 5 penalty points per occurrence. A drill team member may pick up the rifle.
Extra commands will result in 5 penalty points per infraction.
Too few or too many members will cause the team to be penalized 10 percent of the total possible points for that event per each individual short or over.
Teams may not perform to music, sing, or dance.
Only the head judge of the particular event will assess penalty points. This will be done by conferring with the other judges immediately after they have completed their respective score sheets. Judges will annotate why a penalty is given on the score sheet. The penalty will be subtracted after the judges’ scores have been averaged.
If at any time the State Colors or the National Colors or any Colors the team is carrying touches the ground or floor the team will be disqualified for that event.
Graders:
JROTC Cadets will not be used to judge events.
The judges will have a list of required maneuvers and equipment on the grading sheets.
