What do Peer Advisors do?

Peer Advisors assist students with basic questions about academics and co-curricular activities, and help students navigate the myriad requirements and opportunities that exist at UMass. In cooperation with Academic Advisors, Academic Deans and Career & Professional Development staff, Peer Advisors offer their peers guidance for academic success from a student’s perspective.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

§  Must be a UMass student with at least 15 completed credits and a minimum of one year remaining at UMass

§  3.0 GPA or above

§  Must have prior experience working with people, preferably students

§  Must be able to participate in a class that meets weekly for 1 hour and 15 minutes

§  Must be able to participate in approximately 6 hrs/week of class time/homework, training/peer advising, and community outreach

§  Must attend one training at the end of the spring semester (date TBD)


Responsibilities

§  Participate in class discussions and complete weekly reading, writing, midterm/final paper

§  Advise and educate students on the SBS-Global Education Requirement

§  Advise and educate students on the UMass General Education Requirements

§  Inform and educate students about University Resources

§  Coordinate/attend and participate in departmental and College activities

§  Perform community outreach to students, especially first-years and transfers
