Say It All in Six WordsMrs. Morgan

Your goal for this, our first assignment of the year, is to write a 6-word memoir (ABOUT YOURSELF). The story you choose to tell in these six words can be about any aspect of your life: your beliefs, your goals, your hobbies, sports you play, things you love, things you hate. Brevity (shortness or briefness) is the key to this project. You must choose your words wisely in order to fully capture the essence of your personalities. You will be presenting your six words in two – three minute presentation in front of the class. The guidelines for this assignment are as follows.

You must use:

Appropriate Vocabulary: I am hoping I do not have to state the obvious that these six words need to be school appropriate. What I mean by “appropriate vocabulary” is try not to use an overabundance of “cheap” words like a, and, the, was, is, etc. Use action verbs, and vivid adjectives to describe your subject. Obviously you’ll have to use these words, but do so sparingly.

Appropriate Structure: Just because you are using six words does not mean you cannot have structure—an intro, a body, a conclusion? A chronological sequence of events and ideas? I do not want to see you throw six random words together about yourself.

Voice: Be sure your memoirs accurately depict the life of your subject. The reader should be able to connect the subject with the ‘story’ that is being told to him/her.

Examples:

Dad expected more. I delivered less.

Music. It saves me every day.

Second daughter. Second wife. Second mother.

Reality has arrived. Well, sort of.

Ponder. Worry. Idea. Research. Write. Repeat.

Curious to see what happens next.

Visual Presentation:For your presentation you are going to read your six word memoir to the class, in addition to creating a visual to go along with it. You are not being graded on your artistic abilities but I would like to see a drawn depiction and vivid color to help in the presentation of your six words.

At the end of the presentation, you will hand in your six words, along with a one page response. In this response I want to know what you chose these words, what they mean and how your artistic depiction of the six words enhances your presentation.

CLASS PRESENTATIONS WILL BE DONE ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH

Please remember, this is an individual assignment. While friends are very helpful when it comes to getting us started in thinking about ourselves, I want to know what you think of yourself, not what your friends think of you.
