Discovery camps offer preview of innovation school
Has your child ever built an entire city of Legos? Do your kids love to explore the outdoors, picking up bugs and rocks, and getting dirty? Do you have a budding chef or fashion designer in your home?
All students in grades 1-7 are invited to indulge their exploratory side and take part in four free Discovery Camps, hosted as a preview to the learning students will be engaged in at the proposed Fred Tjardes School of Innovation, slated to open in Greeley-Evans School District 6 in 2017.
Four free Discovery Camps will be held monthly through December, and will feature the hands-on learning and collaborative discovery that will be a feature of the Fred Tjardes School of Innovation. The camps are free, but parents can contribute to the supplies and snacks their child will receive during the day. The dates and locations of the Discovery Camps are:
  • Saturday, September 10 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the District 6 Administration Building, 1025 9th Avenue. The topic is community planning, and students will explore, discover, plan and create their own community.
  • Thursday and Friday, October 6 and 7 from 4:30-7:30 p.m., location to be announced. This camp will allow children to create fashion from recycled materials.
  • Saturday, November 12 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Poudre Learning Center, 8313 West F Street, Greeley. Children will explore nature with hands-on lessons and up-close encounters with real animals.
  • Friday, December 16 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the District 6 Service Center, 2508 4th Avenue in Greeley. This camp is Chopped – The Global Holiday Edition. Based on the popular food show, students will create dishes from a set of ingredients in a timed, friendly competition.

District 6 is in the planning stages for the Fred Tjardes School of Innovation. Named after a District 6 educator, the school will be project-based, meeting Colorado State Standards through a hands-on curriculum and instruction. The Board of Education will consider approving the school moving forward early next year. If approved, the district plans to apply for innovation status for the school through the Colorado Department of Education in the spring of 2017, and open in August 2017.
