Blood pressure and heart rate variability

New technologies – Drug effects

Satellite Symposium

of World Congress of Hypertension (19th Scientific meeting

of the International Society of Hypertension)

Budapest 28. June 2002 Hungary

In the last decade more and more publications deal with the short-time and the long-time (whole day) blood pressure variability for the analysing the moment-to moment variation in blood pressure and its clinical significance in normal and hypertensive states. The assessment of the measured and calculated parameters (standard deviation, variation coefficients, normalised values of variability) give a possibility us to reestablish the early recognition of the dangerous situation due to sudden increase or rapid fluctuation of blood pressure during night-or day time or some shorter time intervals. We can be analysed the effects of antihypertensive drugs whether they are capable to smooth daily spikes of blood pressure.

The parallel monitoring of ECG and blood pressure is able to reveal the relationship between the clinical and electrocardiographic events and blood pressure variation patterns. The time domain method and the spectral analysis of heart rate variability are the other part of this analysis giving a key for us to looking for the connection between the vegetative tone and the blood pressure variability.

The main topics of the satellite Symposium:1./ Measurement methods of blood pressure variability 2./ Organ damage and blood pressure variability 3./ Effect of antihypertensive drugs on blood pressure variability 4./ Parallel ECG and blood pressure monitoring, clinical applications 5./ Methods for measuring heart rate variability 6./ Baroreflex mechanism 7./Sympathetic and parasympathetic tone and heart rate variability 8./ Drug effects on blood pressure and heart rate variability.
