SASHT International speaker workshop: Fine tuning hand performance

This two day course aims to provide those working in musculoskeletal practice with more detailed knowledge and clinical skills in assessment and management of the upper limb as it relates to hand function and performance.
A comprehensive understanding of upper limb anatomy and functional research findings will be applied to assessing and managing hand and upper limb dysfunction in the clinical setting.
The course includes:
- a functional review of the proximal upper limb anatomy in its kinetic chain role in supporting and directing goal-directed hand activities.
- Clinically applied anatomy and biomechanics of the hand will be presented, with considerations related to assessment and management of musculoskeletal dysfunction, using a range of examples, particularly from musicians.
- Practical components include a review of surface anatomy, palpation, special co-ordination tests, fine motor control exercises of the hand and thumb.
Presenter: Bronwen Ackermann (PhD, MPH, BAppScPT) is a physiotherapist, who has worked in private practice, specialising with musicians and complex upper limb conditions, for nearly 30 years.
Bronwen is also a senior anatomy lecturer in the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney and a musicians’ health researcher focussing on the impact of pain, fatigue, biomechanics and anxiety on upper limb muscle control and performance.
Bronwen has published over 50 articles and book chapters on musicians’ health, and is the High Performance Consultant & Practitioner at the Australian National Academy of Music.
She is the current Editor-in-Chief of the ‘Medical Problems of Performing Artists’ journal and is on the Board of Directors of the Performing Arts Medicine Association.
She has worked for many years running workshops and delivering lectures on a large range of musicians’ health topics to both musicians and health professionals both in Australia and internationally.
She has recently written and delivered the first sports physicians performing arts medicine training program in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine and the Performing Arts Medicine Association.
