Camacho Interview 12/11/10
Interview with Tara Camacho of East St. Louis, Illinois
Conducted by Sarah Muñoz on Dec. 11th, 2010
Sarah: Hello, my name is Sarah Muñoz and I’m here in East St. Louis with Tara Camacho and she’s going to talk to me a little bit about herself and an object that she has here that inspires her. Tara, do you want to tell me a little about yourself?
Tara: I’m 34 years old. I’m married and I have five kids. That’s about it. I have a pretty regular, boring life.
Sarah: Alright, and what is this object you have here that inspires you?
Tara: My acceptance to nursing school. Practical nursing school.
Sarah: When did you get it?
Tara: I received this letter on May 11th of 2010.
Sarah: How does it inspire you?
Tara: It inspires me because it’s kind of like a new freedom that I can have in my life that I’ve never had before. I can, when I finish nursing school, I have opportunities and choices that I can make that I could never possibly make before in my life when I was just a regular unskilled worker.
Sarah: So, where are you going to school at?
Tara: At Washington School of Practical Nursing. [In Washington, Missouri]
Sarah: But you live here in East St. Louis?
Tara: Yes.
Sarah: How long have you lived here?
Tara: I moved here in August of this year right before I started school.
Sarah: What made you decide to move to East St. Louis?
Tara: An opportunity for my husband to work, a better opportunity than what we had in Missouri and, with me going to nursing school and all of the hard work that goes into that, he decided that we should move here so that he could get a better job and I wouldn’t have to work so I could focus on my studies.
Sarah: How’s nursing school going for you?
Tara: It’s going really good. At mid-semester, I had all As. [Kids in background.] At mid-semester, I had all As, but I’ve had a couple of Bs on tests so I could possibly have some Bs now, but that’s still above average.
Sarah: Is there anything that you want to tell me about your family?
Tara: I got a big one. I’ve got five kids, from fifteen [years] to six months. That is, in itself, an inspiration to do something with my life. I’m married. I’ve been married for three years. I don’t know, we’re just regular working people.
Sarah: Ok, is there anything else that you want to tell me about yourself, or your family, or your object or anything else that I haven’t asked you yet?
Tara: No, that’s it.
Sarah: Alright, well thank you for your interview. We’ll have to take a picture of your letter and that’s it. Thank you.
Tara: You’re welcome.
