PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

WELCOME TO THE START OF OUR

OCTOBER SUMMER SEASON FOR 2016/2017

I’m honoured to be leading the great Sea Devils Swim club for the third year in 2016. The last two years has seen a tremendous period of change, with a huge increase in members at the younger age groups and retention at the more experience end. We persevered last year and now have an efficient way of electronically registering swimmers for club nights. We put on gold coin donation BBQ every club night, so members don’t have to worry about cooking on club night.

All of us over the years have seen kids turn in to teenagers, progress to the highest levels in swimming, while attending to the school responsibilities, learning to drive and turning and maturing into fine adults.

It’s hard to pick who is going to be a champion. There are those with ability, but don’t use it at that time, there are those with determination, but lack the strength, there are those with both determination and strength that get injured and pull back. What about the ones with the funny stroke, or the ones that were never on the radar to start with? Being an athlete is about commitment, determination and hard work, just like in the real world. I am yet to find a successful person “anywhere” that has not sacrificed and worked hard for what they have achieved. Talent won’t get you there on its own, but determination will and hard work will.

My congratulations to all the past members of the Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club for the foundation on which our club has been built upon. My congratulations to the present members of the club for their time, talents and dedication! To future members of our club, I hope that they find our club wonderful place for the whole family to come participate in and build your kids confidence.

Presidents Notes about the Sea Devils Swim Club

Why join the Sea Devils swim club?keep reading!

Did you know that The Sea Devils Swim Club is a supportive, family friendly swim club that is already one of the most successful, respected and competitive clubs in Australia? If your kid can swim 25 meters, then you should join…that is the starting point for any future champion and it only gets better. Our registrations opens in September 2016 and if you have any questions about joining, call Mark Smith on 0418. 263. 763

Swim Club and coaching

With expert coaching, stroke correction and enough training we know how to help you through from 25mtrs to 50mtrs…100mts. At Sea Devils Swim Club nights, you can practice and build confidence in a family friendly and supportive environment. So by practicing and having some fun at swim club you are actually preparing to perhaps be the next school swim champion and making it through to Zone and then Regionals, Metropolitan, State, and Nationals. It’s even possible to go beyond that, if you work hard enough you could be the next Olympian, just like our head coach Craig Stevens.

This booklet aims to answer most questions, but if there is something you’re not sure about, then don’t hesitate to ask the coaches club members or even other parents.

Special Note to Parents and Carers

The club’s success is built on the work put in by many parents, whose kids are club members. All parents, carers and swimmers are expected to contribute in some way to making this club greater, whether it be on the BBQ, Timekeeping, setting up or packing up. There is a small job for all. I want to make the following point clear. If you are not prepared to help out with your kid’s sport, then this is probably not the right sport or club for you…that’s the way it is in most clubs. Also, leaving your kid behind is not acceptable at club nights. The good news is, I have only had to ask one parent and their swimmers to resign from our club in the time I have been president.Remember – everyone helping out at club nights and carnivals are volunteers and don’t get paid.

PARENTAL SUPPORT

The running of carnivals, club and our time trial nights takes a lot of organisation. Your support and assistance in the running of these events is needed and greatly appreciated. If you can help out on club nights by timekeeping or marshalling please volunteer. We've all heard it before "MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK' - this is so true - if you want a fast night at the pool we must have your help.

The Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club is a highly competitive club and one of the strongest in the Metsea Region. It is because of this that sometimes we are required to timekeep, not only at smaller club meets, but at the bigger MetSEA and NSW State meets, as per NSW Swimming guidelines.

In the week leading up to the meet, a timeline will be issued from NSW Swimming and then a TK roster will be drawn up and emailed to leading Clubs. If SSSD is selected then we will create our own roster from the families of those swimmers who have entered.

IF you have entered your child you will be required to time keep.

Please keep a look out in your email for this roster.

If you cannot make your allocated TK timeslot then please arrange with another wonderful SSSD parent to fill your spot. The timekeeping roster will not be changed once it has been emailed out.

We recommend you email the club prior and request your preferred timeslot.

If you would like to read any information on becoming a Technical Official, please read the link from NSW Swimming website.

Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club has grown this way because of the tireless work and support of our parents. Please keep up this great work - the club needs you.

FRIDAY SWIM CLUB NIGHT

Sans Souci Sea Devils conducts Friday Swim Club Night every fortnight commencing at 6pm sharp, from October through to March. We do stop during the Christmas/January holidays.

Please note that no child can be left unattended at the pool on Friday Club Night evenings. Swim Club is fun but requires parental supervision. No child may enter the pool for Friday Club Night, unless accompanied by an adult (over 18 years).

Parents are required to assist with the running of events, particularly timekeeping. No experience is necessary and full training will be provided, and you will be able to gain knowledge from our more experienced club members.

Please remember that the children only compete against their own "personal best" (PB) times. They are here to enjoy themselves and their sport and hopefully improve their swimming. Please support them in their chosen sport by encouraging them and becoming involved in the Club.

Events are programmed each fortnight as per the timetable. However, this is a guide, only, and may be altered at the discretion of the Race Official when and where necessary. We try to run our Friday Night Club night like an actual carnival. This way the children learn what to do when they are going to a swimming carnival.

The majority of events are Point score events, with Championship events held at the end of the summer season.

ENTERING EVENTS

  • All entries must be received by the "Friday Night Race Co-Ordinator/Secretary" by Thursday 5pm the day before Friday Club Night. Entries are on line via AnotherPb.com.au.
  • Please be advised Late Entries made on the Friday night MAY be accepted and swim times will be taken BUT they will NOT be recorded in our database.
  • It is the swimmer's responsibility to ensure that they have correctly entered an event.
  • Swimmers may withdraw from an event without penalty. If the race has already commenced, withdrawals must be advised to theMarshaller.
  • A swimmer can only enter a maximum of 3 swims per Club night.( 1 in each Stroke).

MARSHALLING

The Marshall will call swimmers to the marshalling area (usually near the start blocks) prior to each event. It is the swimmer's responsibility to arrive at the marshalling area when events are called. Those members arriving after their events have been marshalled may be ineligible to compete. Exceptions will be made at the discretion of the Marshall.

The Marshall will place the children in their races and they will be directed where to sit.

So as to allow a smooth procedure in the marshalling area, it is essential that swimmers wait patiently and quietly. Swimmers who disrupt the marshalling procedures may be asked to leave the area and we ask for your total support in ensuring this occurs.

Unless otherwise notified, all swims will be scratch events (swimmers all start together at the same time), with heats and lanes allocated according to previous best times.

STARTING

The Starter will call the Swimmers onto the blocks, or into the water for backstroke races, by whistle, and all races will be started by buzzer, electronic hooter or whistle.

Only the Referee on the night can disqualify a swimmer at their discretion.

We ask you to please read the following instructions on the starting and swimming of races and to become familiar with racing procedures.

  1. At the sound of the Referee's whistle, competitors must step up to the back of the starting block (or in backstroke or medley relays, to enter the water, and a second long whistle to bring swimmers to the starting position).
  1. At the command “take your marks”, Competitors take up their starting positions and remain stationary.
  1. When all Competitors are stationary, the Starter will give the starting signal by pistol, hooter or whistle.
  1. The Club will function under the “Two Start Rule” for 25m races and the “One Start Rule” for all races 50m and greater. A disqualified swimmer may still swim in the race, their time and points will not be recorded but their swim will still enable them to qualify for Championship events.
  1. All Swimmers must remain in the water in their lanes until the Referee signals them.

PROMOTION TO LONGER DISTANCES

New members may compete in specific distances at the discretion of committee members.

Members are promoted to longer distances according to their ability to swim the various distances within a specified time.
