These awards are an opportunity for our campus to recognize and honor outstanding tenured faculty and full-time lecturers who have demonstrated significant, long-term contributions to the university and to their disciplines.

The award categories are in the areas of:

  • Teaching (Tenured faculty)
  • Teaching (Full-time lecturers)
  • Professional achievement (Tenured faculty)
  • Service (Tenured faculty).

Honoreesreceivea stipend(subject to tax)forthe Excellence inTeaching, ExcellenceinProfessional AchievementandExcellencein Service awards. In addition, honoreesreceive acommemorative plaqueandcertificate.

NominationandAwardProcess

Nominations will besolicited annuallyduringtheFall semesterviapublication in theSFStateCampus Memo, email notifications, and other campus media. Nominations maybesubmitted by full-time SFState faculty only.

Nomination materials must include:

(1)anomination formwhich requires thesignatureofthe nominator (the nominee’s signature is optional);

(2)a two-pagecover letter from the nominator highlighting the accomplishments of the

nominee;

(3) up to fivepages ofadditional documentationto further support the nomination, which

may include letters of recommendation;

(4) the nominee’s comprehensive curriculumvitae (in addition to the supporting

documentation);

(5) for the teaching-award nominee, a summary of teaching effectiveness (student and peer

evaluations) for at least the past five years. Please provide a list or table with the

following information:

  • All courses taught by semester and year for at least the past five years;
  • The total number of students enrolled in each course;
  • The number of students who completed evaluations;
  • Quantitative mean scores; and
  • Comparative departmental means (College means if applicable).

Applications will be reviewed bytheFacultyHonors and Awards Committee, and thewinners will be announced at thelast Senatemeetingoftheacademicyear(May).

A formal presentation ofthe awardswill bemadeat theAll UniversityFacultyMeeting,at the

beginning ofthe following academicyear(August).

AwardCriteria

Nominees forthe Excellence in Teaching Award (Tenured),Excellence in Professional Achievement Award, and Excellence in Service Awardmustbefull-time tenured faculty members.Nominees forthe Excellence in Teaching Award (Lecturer) must be full-time lecturers. Deans, administrators, and previous winners ofthis awardare ineligible.

Thesuccessful candidatefor eachawardwill havea recordof sustained and continuous excellence.Supporting materials from the nominator should provide evidence of the following criteria for each award:

Excellence inTeaching Award (Tenured)

•Consistently excellent teachingeffectiveness.

•Creation of an academicenvironment that fostersstudent learning, achievement and

enthusiasm.

•Positiveimpact on students.

•Implementation ofinnovative approaches to teaching.

•Contributions to improved instruction and curriculum.

Excellence inTeaching Award (Lecturer)

• Consistently excellent teachingeffectiveness.

• Creation of an academicenvironment that fostersstudent learning, achievement and

enthusiasm.

•Positiveimpact on students.

•Implementation ofinnovative approaches to teaching.

•Contributions to improved instruction and curriculum.

Excellence inProfessional Achievement Award

•Evidenceofwideacceptanceand/orpublication ofthenominee’s work byindividuals who have an overarchingperspectiveofthecandidate’s contributions and achievements.

For scholarship:

•A sustained record ofpublication in peer-reviewed journals, research monographs,

and/or other discipline-related texts.

•A sustained record ofpresentations at national and/orinternational conferences.

•A successfulrecord ofintramural and/orextramural funding.

For creativeworks:

•A sustained record ofexcellencein creativeactivity related to the nominee’s specific field or discipline, such as exhibitions, readings, performances, productions, and stagework.

•A record demonstratingevidenceofcritical reviews, inclusion ofworks in permanent collections, retrospectives, and other forms ofpeerorpublic recognition.

Excellence in ServiceAward

For serviceto the campus:

•Leadership in addressing important institutional issues.

•Distinction in thequalityofserviceto theinstitution, at the departmental,College,

University, or CSU system-wide level.

For serviceto thecommunity:

•Leadership which enhances thewell-being of the community(local, regional, state,

national,orinternational), and therelationship between theUniversityand the

community.

•Distinction in serviceto one’s profession and/orprofessionalorganizations.
