San Diego City College Drama Program Presents

2nd Annual Festival of New Plays

Black Box Theatre | March 10-19

SAN DIEGO—March 6, 2017—The San Diego City College Dramatic Arts Program presents the second annual Festival of New Plays. In the Black Box Theatre at San Diego City College, performances are March 10-19, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm.

San Diego City College’s Drama Department expanded its Playwriting Program with a fall semester class (Drama 108) that provided the opportunity for some students to bring their work into the spring semester with the production of individual 10-minute plays.

Students not only write the plays but act as assistant directors, stage managers and crew the productions as well. Scripts were submitted from plays developed in Professor Matthew Salazar-Thompson’s Playwriting class, from writing assignments in Professor Farrell Foreman’s English classes, and also by students who have an interest in writing for the stage.

After culling through all the student script submissions, the directors of the plays, professors Foreman, Salazar-Thompson and Patrice Amon, selected the strongest eight scripts and held auditions in late January. Over 60 students auditioned for the roles, and several student actors were cast. As head of the Playwriting Program, Professor Thompson hasbeen working with the student playwrights in finessing characters, strengthening dialogue and finding clarity in their scripts.

There will be talk-backs with the playwrights following every performance.

Tickets are $15 for General Admission and $10 for Students, Seniors, Military, or SDCCD employees. Tickets can be purchased at the door in cash or in advance at (plus handling fee).
