The San Diego Chapter of the National Organization for Mexican American Rights (NOMAR) is proud to announce its 2011 Scholarship Fund. NOMAR is a national non-profit organization established for the purpose of promoting and defending civil rights and enhancing equal employment opportunity for Hispanics.

1.  In keeping with San Diego NOMAR’s objective of increasing the educational and professional skills of Hispanics for the purpose of enhancing their employment opportunities, the San Diego NOMAR chapter is committed to providing scholarships to students who meet the following scholarship award criteria:

A.  Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of San Diego County.

B.  Must be attending or planning to attend a college or university in the undergraduate level in Spring/Summer/Fall 2011 semester. (College does not have to be in San Diego County.)

C.  Must have evidence of a satisfactory academic standing (i.e. 2.0 GPA or higher preferred)

D.  Scholarship recipient must use funds for educational related expenses.

2.  For Spring/Summer/Fall 2010, there will be five to ten scholarships awarded. Each of the scholarships will be in the amount of five-hundred dollars ($500.00). If additional funds are available, more scholarships will be awarded.

3.  The following procedures apply:

A.  Chapter members and local community contacts will be notified of scholarship availability and will be encouraged to disseminate the information as widely as possible. Scholarship availability, information and criteria will also be forwarded to various schools and school districts as determined by the Scholarship Committee.

B.  Interested applicants will be required to submit the Scholarship Application Form (attached) and at two-page essay addressing the following items:

·  Describe your educational plans and your long-term career goals;

·  Describe any extracurricular activities you are involved in (i.e. community involvement, mentorship, tutoring, club membership(s), etc.);

·  Describe how receiving a NOMAR scholarship would help you achieve your goals, and how achievement of your goals might help your community and society as a whole.

A.  Scholarship application form – signed and dated. By signing the application, applicant agrees to allow San Diego NOMAR to use the student’s name in publicizing his/her name if he/she is a scholarship recipient.

B.  Narrative essay – MAXIMUM two-pages

C.  Copy of most recent report card or transcript

D.  One letter of reference (can be from a teacher, counselor, community contact, clergy member, SD NOMAR member, etc.)

All application packets must be submitted or postmarked no later than April 1, 2011.

4.  The San Diego NOMAR Chairperson will appoint a Scholarship Committee Chairperson. The Scholarship Committee Chairperson will select at least two committee members who will review applications and make selection recommendations. Committee members shall have no personal affiliation or relationship to any of the applicants.

5.  The Scholarship Committee will determine specific evaluation criteria to rate the applications, and make selection recommendations to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson, who will make final selections. The scholarship funds will be issued appropriately. The scholarship recipients will be announced by April 15, 2011.
