Sample Packing List for Your Main Suitcase

If you can't carry it yourself, you have packed too much! Pack comfortable clothing for your trip. In general, bring about half the things you think you'll need!

  • Battery-operated travel alarm clock AND watch.
  • A winter coat, gloves, a scarf, and a warm hat.
  • Warm layers, such as sweaters, flannel shirts, or sweatshirt.
  • Shoes for walking and for dressier occasions. Comfort over style, please. I recommend warm boots for this trip.
  • Pairs of jeans. You're guaranteed to need them, and you can wear them almost daily if you need to.
  • Pair of nicer pants. These can rotate in to replace jeans or can be used to dress up.
  • Skirt or dress for women, and collared shirt or nice sweater for men, for the departure dinner, if you’re the sort of person who likes to dress up for departure dinners.
  • Shirt that can be worn with trousers or khakis.
  • T-shirts, sweaters, hoodies, long-sleeve shirts, etc.
  • Toiletries and/or cosmetics
  • Travel umbrella or rain coat
  • Over-the-counter medications as needed (aspirin, Imodium, etc; Band-Aids, Neosporin, or other blister protection, etc.) Keep medication you're currently using in your carry-on bag and let your group leader know what you are carrying.
  • Outlet plug and current converter. Your US electronics will not be able to plug directly into European outlets without a converter.
  • A list that includes your passport number and emergency contact information for both the group and your parents.

  • Reading material or other entertaining items for your flight.
  • Snacks. You won’t be able to take liquids through security but you can purchase bottled water once you get to the terminal.
  • Passport and important papers. Never pack travel documents in your checked luggage.
  • Your itinerary and hotel information card. This is vital in the unlikely event you become separated from the rest of the group and have to give your hotel address to a taxi driver.
  • Essential toiletries and a change of clothing in case you become separated from your suitcase for a few days.
  • Photocopy (in color, if possible) of your passport.
  • An inexpensive camera and either a charger or extra batteries. Make sure to keep some extra batteries in your main suitcase.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Extra set of glasses or contact lenses.
  • Any necessary medication with prescriptions on the bottle if they’re not over-the-counter.
  • Address book, a travel journal, and pens.
  • List of PIN numbers and U.S. and overseas telephone numbers for your credit cards and bank.
