Dear

I am a teacher lucky enough to be currently employed in a school. I am compelled to write to you to express my deep disappointment and frustration as a consequence of the publication by the Department of Education of its Draft Budget for the 2015/16 year.

This Draft Budget is very bad news for me as a teacher, for the children I teach and for my school generally. It is evident from the Draft Budget that school budgets will be reduced significantly [ on average 7%] putting my job at risk and those of other colleagues. Should I be made redundant then class sizes will increase in my school. Cuts to the After School Provision we presently provide will mean it is scaled back or removed altogether putting pressure on hard working parents as they scramble to put in place alternative costly child care provision. The already limited provision available to support those pupils with particular and special learning needs will be subjected to further pressures which will impact negatively on the quality of the support available to these unique children. I also believe that these cuts will have a disastrous impact on our community and its economic prospects and are likely to deepen social and political division. The losers will be children and communities where class sizes increase and teacher and staff numbers decline and their future prospects become even more bleak.

These cuts to educational provision will have a serious and long lasting effect on a generation of our young people. The economic circumstances we find ourselves in have not been brought about by the actions of our pupils or those of their teachers. As a senior politician I urge you to take the opportunity to think again and reflect on what damage these proposed cuts will deliver today and in the future.

My colleagues and I are determined to do all we can to protect the future of our pupils and we need your help and support to do so. I urge you to speak up in defence of your local schools, the children who attend them and their teachers and ensure that schools are protected from these proposed savage cuts. I urge you to challenge and resist this budget. My colleagues and I will be monitoring the local media closely in the days and weeks ahead and we look forward to you demonstrating your commitment to maintaining the quality of educational provision..

Yours sincerely
