Dear [Reporter’s name]:

It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and one person dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, every hour. Fortunately, most skin cancers, including melanoma, are highly curable if detected early and treated properly.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) is asking the public to consider “Who’s Got Your Back?” when it comes to skin cancer prevention and detection. The back is the most common site for melanoma, so it’s important for your viewers to find a partner who can help them apply sunscreen to their back and regularly examine the skin on their back for suspicious spots.

As a board-certified dermatologist and member of the Academy, I hope you’ll consider including this important information in an upcoming segment. I’d be happy to participate in an interview about skin cancer prevention and detection, and I can perform a live skin cancer screening on the air. You also may want to share the following Academy resources with your audience:

·  Information on finding free skin cancer screenings in our community

·  A downloadable body mole map for tracking changes on the skin

·  A How to SPOT Skin Cancer infographic containing tips on how to perform a skin cancer self-exam

·  A How to Select a Sunscreen infographic with tips for choosing a sunscreen that reduces their risk of skin cancer and early skin aging

I will call you soon to determine your interest in a story that asks viewers “Who’s Got Your Back?” In the meantime, please visit SpotSkinCancer.org for more information and resources, and please don’t hesitate to call me at [insert number] if you have any questions.

Thank you so much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

[Your name], MD
