Assignment brief
Purpose of this assignment
The ability to build and maintain computer systems will be an essential requirement for several types of jobs and a useful asset for anyone entering the IT profession.
Scenario
You work for a company that supplies PCs to small businesses in the local area. A local business has contracted your company to supply a new PC. This will be assembled from component parts, tested and then configured.
Task 1: (AC 3.1)
You have to assemble the PC from the component parts, install an operating system and then configure it. The specification calls for:
·  A security password on the BIOS
·  A boot order of USB, HDD and DVD
·  Large fonts and icons
·  An additional admin and standard user
·  A folder for use only by admins
·  A task bar shortcut to open Explorer on the admin folder
Complete the witness statement and take photographs and screenshots as supplementary evidence. Submit an illustrated report showing the steps you took.
Task 2: (AC 3.2, M2)
Write and complete a test plan to show that the PC and peripherals operated as expected.
Task 3 AC (4.1 and D2 )
You have to perform routine maintenance on a PC. This consists of:
·  Anti-malware scan and verifying the firewall
·  Check for updates
·  Changing passwords
·  Cleaning out temporary files and removing obsolete files
·  Cleaning the registry and uninstalling unused applications
·  Taking and verifying a backup
·  Defragmenting the hard disk and running CHKDSK and SMART on all hard drives
·  Checking for BIOS and driver updates
·  Cleaning and removing dust

For D2 you need to create a maintenance schedule which includes details of how the tasks can be automated wherever possible.
Task 4 (AC 4.2 and D1)
Review the specification of the Intel motherboard D101GGC and the Sapphire graphics card HD3650 and state if they are compatible and why.
Upgrade the desktop with the Sapphire card, update the drivers, adjust the resolution and test.
Complete the witness statement and take photographs and screenshots as supplementary evidence. Submit an illustrated report showing the steps you took. Write and complete a test plan to show that the upgrade operated as expected.
