General Conditions of Grant

  1. Grants are available to individuals starting out in archaeology as either amateurs or students which would include sixth formers, undergraduates and mature students to assist with the costs of various types of training, both practical and academic andtoenable such individuals togain experience in archaeological fieldwork and other forms of research in East and West Sussex . N.B. Funding is NOT available to meet the training needs of professional archaeologists or towards funding a degree course or similar professional qualification.
  1. Grants are available for: short training courses (normally lasting from one to five days long, but sometimes longer) covering such subjects as: surveying, excavation methods, environmental sampling, identifying, recording and interpreting finds, etc; day schools covering either practical skills or relevant academic information; attendance at relevant conferences; and research projects which provide students and/or amateurs with expert supervision and some training. Feedback on the course etc will be required from the student by the Research Committee.
  1. Grants will not be awarded retrospectively.
  2. Applications for funding are considered by the Society’s Research Committee. This is usually done at the meetings of the Committee held four times a year but applications can also be considered between meetings if necessary. No Committee member who could have any conflict of interest over a particular application will be notified of it. If the voting Committee members support the application they will recommend it to the Council of the Society, or its head representatives, for final approval. Council’s decision should be made within 5 working days of being notified by the Research Committee. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by the Research Officer.
  3. Applications can be submitted at any time, but at least 5 weeks prior to the commencement of the intended course/training/conference. Applications received after this time will not be considered. Queries and applications should be made to the Research Officer ().
  4. Membership of the Society is not a prerequisite for applicants, but it is hoped that recipients of grants who are not already members will feel encouraged to join the Society.
  1. Grants are made in arrears on production of a statement of expenditure accompanied by supporting receipts/invoices (see also paragraph 8). Proof of completing the course will be required (e.g. a certificate or letter of attendance).
  2. At the time of claiming the grant, recipients may be required to submit a brief written report on their studies or training experience and outcome, suitable for inclusion in the Society’s newsletter (SussexPast & Present) or website. On the ward of a grant it will be made clear to the applicant what form of feedback will be required from the applicant. Failure to do so will materially prejudice future applications from the same person or group.

Applications must be submitted on the attached form by email to the Research Officer ().Alternatively, applications can be postedin hard copy to the Research Officer at Barbican House Museum, 169 High Street. Lewes, BN7 1YE. Postal applications will not be acknowledged unless a stamped, addressed envelope is enclosed,
  1. The application form must be fully completed, including a detailed breakdown of ALL costs that are being applied for. If you are also seeking funding from other sources these should be acknowledged and the Society informed of all decisions made. Any additional information that you wish the Committee to consider should be restricted to one side of A4 paper/email. In the case of an applicant who is still at school or college (minimum age 16) or who is a student at university, this supporting document can be a reference from a teacher or tutor. In the case of other individuals, such as those who belong to local archaeological societies, the application can also be supported by a reference from a suitable person, such as an experienced officer of a local society. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in your application being rejected. The outcome of the application will be communicated to the applicant as soon as possible after the Research Committee has had a decision from Council. No discussion or correspondence will be entered into on the success or failure of an application.
