Fall 2013 SLC Advisory Lessons

Advisory Day # 1: 11/19: SLC PREP- Sign up for Fall SLC time

Lesson:

  • Please distribute Conference Sign-Up Letter.Completed forms are dueback by Thursday, November 21st.This form contains SLC FAQs, as well as asks families to list their topthreepreferences for SLC dates and times.

(Prior to SLC, tailor your "SLC sign-up sheet" to reflect the dates and times you will be available for conferences. Then, once you distribute the letter during Advisory, ask students to add/delete conference times and dates so this form reflects the conference schedule you have established).

  • Please distribute MAP Parent Letter and MAP Family Guide/RIT Chart.At home, students will sharetheir fall MAP scores in Math and Reading with their family. These scores have been recorded at the bottom of this document.Secondly, they will set growth goals for their spring MAP test in theempty boxes provided.The completed goal sheets are dueback by Tuesday, December 10th.

(Please note, ifone of the fall test resultboxes at the bottom of the letter states "incomplete," this means that the student did not take this specific test. If both fall boxes are blank, this means that the student did not take the fall MAP).

Advisory Day #2: 11/21: SLC PREP- Sign up for Fall SLC time & Watch SLC Video

Lesson:

  • Introduce purpose of Student-Led Conferences. The script from the Conference Sign-Up Lettercontains the important SLC FAQs to cover. (5 minutes)
  • Fill out postcards with finalized SLC date and time. Have students fillout the back of the postcard with the necessary conference information. Once you have recorded the proper SLC date and time on your Student-Led Conference Sign-Up Sheet, place address labels on postcards, and record conference date, time, etc. on the postcards. Finally, please place your completed postcards in the wire-mesh basket on the table behind the staff mailboxes. (5 minutes)
  • Explain binder organization for upcoming SLCs:

The labeling of the binder is slightly different than it was last year. The binder will be organized into 3 sections: Academics, Goals, and Career & College Readiness. Students will use all 8 of the tabs included in divider tab packet to represent the 3 sections of the binder.

-Tab1-6 for Academics: to label each of their classes by name:

( English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Elective, and Elective)

-Tab 7: Goals

-Tab 8: Career & College Readiness (students may want to use the abbreviation “CCR”

*For 8th grade Advisory students only—place your Fall 2013 dividers in front of your 7th grade Advisory materials.(10 minutes)

  • Watch sample Salk Middle School Student Led Conference Video—on the Y Drive in the (Fall SLC Planning 2013) folder—SLC Videos (10 minutes)

With these being the main tasks, please know that you can personalize this schedule to fit your needs with your advisory as long as the main tasks are completed. We have created lessons and this framework as a guide, but there is flexibility in this framework.

All the SLC materials in your boxes for this week’s sessions are color coded according the binder tab they will be placed behind.

Advisory Day #3: 12/9 Complete Academics section (25 minutes)

Lesson:

  • Students will have collected work samples from each of their classes and reflected on them before arriving at today’s session.
  • Students should use their time today to finish any incomplete items on theAssignment and Learning Target Reflection sheet for each of their 6 classes.
  • Once they have reflected on the assignments, place the Reflection sheet in the front of the Academics section, and place each assignment behind the proper class tab.
  • If students do not have a work sample from a class, place the completed Missing Piecedocument behind the respective class tab
  • Pass out Portfolio Checklist and instruct students to use the portfolio checklist to mark off the portfolio items that they completed today, and to use this sheet to keep track of the items they will be responsible for completing over the next days. This sheet reflects the sections of the binder, and the order the items will be placed in.
  • Place Portfolio checklist in the front of the binder.
  • Complete any unfinished items from the previous advisory sessions, such as binder assembly, watching SLC video, etc.

Advisory Day #4: 12/10: Complete Goal Setting section (25 minutes)

Lesson:

  • Pass out theSLC Fall 2013Goal Setting packet. Explain to students that the purpose of this lesson is to help them set 1st semester personal, social and academic goals, which will be revisited at their spring conference.
  • Place completed Goal packets in the binder behind the Goals tab.
  • Place returned and completed MAP Goal Setting sheet behind the Goals tab as well.
  • Complete unfinished tasks from previous advisory sessions.

*If students do not return their goals sheets by their SLC date, please refer to the second set of MAP results that were previously delivered with your Advisory materials.

Advisory Day #5: 12/11: SLC Final Prep: College and Career Readiness section & SLC Practice (25 minutes)

Lesson:

  • Hand out College Bound Scholarship application and CBS script. Ask students to place these items behind the College and Career Readiness tab in their binder.
  • Hand out ReadiStep results and RS script. Ask student to place these items behind the College and Career Readiness tab as well.
  • Instruct students to revisit the Portfolio Checklist to make sure that they have accounted for all of the necessary SLC items by placing anX next to them. Then, ask them to double check that their items are behind the proper tabs, and are in the proper order.
  • Pass out SLC Spring Talking Points sheet. Explain that this sheet provides the important talking points they will share with their parent(s)/guest(s) during their SLC. Ask students to write their conference date and time at the top of this sheet. Place this document in the front of the binder before the Portfolio Checklist.
  • Practice SLCs. Pair students together, and instruct them to use their Talking Points Sheet to guide them as they share their binders with their partner. Practice the conference—beginning to end.
  • Complete any unfinished business.
