SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

ACTION PLAN: RISING SENIORS

PLAN FOR THE YEAR AHEAD

___ Review your transcript with your counselor to ensure you have completed all your course requirements for graduation and college readiness

___ Stay involved in extracurricular activities.

___ Begin to think of Senior Project ideas. You will narrow down your topic in Epistemology, but take some time now to explore topics that interest you.

___ Remember to sign up for a retreat. All retreats are scheduled in the Fall.

STAY FOCUSED

___ Use A-Block to ask your teachers for help

___ Take advantage of PALS (peer tutoring)

___ Consider how your counselor can support your academic efforts. Need help with managing your workload? Sports? Volunteer work? Job? Your counselor is here to address your needs.

___ How are you taking care of your wellness needs? Share your PDF (Play time, Down time, Family time) plans with your counselor!

FAMILY CONNECTION

___ Complete the Junior Questionnaire

___ Stay connected with Ms. Ryan by reading her emails, taking advantage of A-Block session related to college prep, and fully utilizing Lasallian Days to work on college related materials

___ Use the information on Family Connection to explore colleges that match your interests

___ Begin to add colleges to “Colleges I am thinking about” list on your Family Connection. You and Ms. Ryan will discuss this list in depth at your 1:1 meetings.

CAREER

___ Job shadow in a career that you find interesting

___ Find your passion! Volunteer at a program/agency that fits with your career aspirations

___ Take the “career interest profile” on Family Connection and add a career to your list.

___ This summer is the best time to build your resume. Look for job opportunities through Ms. Ryan and Mr. Banks.

___ Listen to school announcements for volunteer/job opportunities based on your Family Connection Learning Styles Inventory and Career Interest Profiler

COLLEGE

___Visit colleges. Take campus tours and, at colleges you’re serious about, schedule interviews with admissions counselors. The best times to visit schools are when they are in session.

___ Plan college visits during Enrichment Week, Easter Break or Lasallian Days

___Think about who you will request a teacher recommendation from and how many you will need.

___ Attend College Night for Seniors (end of September, specific date TBD)

___Attend Case Studies in April

___Keep your grades up! For many colleges, junior year grades are the final grades colleges will see.

___Update your resume. This information can be offered to your teacher or anyone who will be writing you a letter of recommendation. Some colleges allow you to upload a resume and you can include it in scholarship applications.

___Sign up for the Saint Mary’s summer course “College Access” and get a head start on the college planning process.

___Register for the SAT or ACT as needed. Research if you the colleges that interest you require subject tests, and if so, how many.

___ Consider if a GAP YEAR is appropriate for you. Transitioning to a four-year program is not the best option for every student. You might greatly benefit from taking time to work, travel, or volunteer before you make a commitment to attending college. Talk it over with your family to see if a GAP YEAR is a good option for you.GAP YEAR fair is coming to the Bay Area beginning in January.

___ East Bay College Fair on Saturday, May 7, 2017, at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SUMMER BREAK

___ Read, Read, Read -Studies have shown that students who read for pleasure perform better on standardized tests. An increase in vocabulary and writing skills has been linked to students who read outside of assigned readings.

___ Build your resume on Family Connection

___ Begin to work on your college essays

___ Enroll in local, national, or international enrichment programs
