Purpose of the course: COURSE DESCRIPTION: A course designed to develop skills in floriculture and the techniques used to develop and complete a variety of retail items normally sold in a retail florist business. The skills learned are necessary to gain and maintain employment in the retail florist industry.

*At the end of this course students can receive a High School Certification from the Texas State Florists’ Association to put on their resume. If students choose to take the High School Floral Certification Test the cost is$100.Start saving now!!!!

Subjects we will be covering:

*Employability Characteristics of a Successful Worker in the Modern Workplace

*History of Floral Design

* Using the Elements and Principles of Design effectively in Floral Arrangementsand Classify Cut Flowers and Foliage Used in Floral Design

*Demonstrate Techniques to Increase the Keeping Qualities of Cut Flowers and Foliage Used in Floral Designs

*Create Basic Geometric Floral Designs Using Fresh Cut Flowers and Foliage

* Construct Basic Geometric Floral Designs Using Silk Flowers and DriedFlowers

*Prepare Corsages & Boutonnieres Using Fresh Cut Flowers & Silk Flowers

* Prepare Floral Designs for Holidays, Banquets & Other Special Occasions

* Classify & Identify Tropical Foliage Plants

* Recognize Safe Work Practices That Apply to Floral Design

Grades:

Summative grades make up 60% of a student’s grade:

Make-Up Work

It is the student’s responsibility to complete the missed work within the time period stated in the District Grading Policy. Students shall have a time equal to the days absent from class plus one day to complete all missed assignments. Work, assigned prior to an absence may be due on the first return day.

Late Work

Students are expected to work productively and meet each assignments requirement by its due date. Ample time is given in class to complete each assignment. It is the students’ responsibility to complete missed work within SHS student handbook guidelines.

Tutorials

Tutorials will be offered in the mornings before school on Thursday mornings from 8:15-9:00. Tuesday and Thursday during 5th period lunches and other times by appointment.

Rules/non-negotiable

  1. Respect-people, the classroom and all tools and materials.
  2. Clean- pick up after yourself, washing all materials and placing them in the designated area.
  3. Use cell phones at the appropriate times designated by teacher for on topicpurposes only.

Expectations/procedures

Use appropriate language and noise levels.

Don’t talk when the teacher is talking

Ask 2 people at your table then ask teacher.

Put green card up at table if you need teacher.

Pay attention to demonstrations in order to use proper techniques and processes.

  1. Movement

Must sign in and out on bathroom log

Be mindful when getting supplies and cleaning up.

Do not get out of your seat to visit with someone across the room.

  1. Participation

Copying directions for all assignments are required notebook assignments.

Asking questions during demonstration is encouraged along with notes.

Student Floral Room Safety Contract

I agree to:

  • Act responsibly at all times in the floral room.
  • Follow all instructions given by my teacher.
  • Work only those activities assigned to me and approved by my teacher.
  • Protect my eyes, face, hands, and body by wearing proper clothing and using protective equipment provided by my school.
  • Carry out good housekeeping practices as instructed by my teacher.
  • Know the location of safety and first aid equipment in the floral room.
  • Notify my teacher immediately if there is an emergency.
  • NEVER work alone in the floral room.
  • NEVER eat or drink in the floral room (water in a container with a lid is acceptable)
  • Handle floral supplies and equipment only when authorized by the teacher.
  • Follow the teacher’s instructions explicitly when using floral supplies and equipment.
  • NEVER enter or work in a supply area unless instructed to do so; and only as my teacher supervises me.
  • Use supplies materials and equipment as the teacher instructs.
  • Bring all supplies needed for class.

I release the EMS ISD and its agents from all responsibility in the event of loss or damage.
