The following is our risk management summary. The purpose of this summary isto enable the centre to meet the ever-increasing demand for information required by its clients. It outlines those items of information most commonly requested bygroup leaders who have responsibility for filling in risk assessments.

Adventure Activities Licence Details

The holding of an Adventure Activities licence means that the centre has beeninspected by The Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALS), an independentorganisation sponsored by the Health and Safety Executive. Inspection coverssafety management systems including risk identification and management,safety and emergency procedures, storage and maintenance of equipment andthe submission of evidence of the competence of our instructional staff(either through National Governing Body qualifications or assessment andratification of an individual’s competence by someone with an appropriatequalification). The Licensing Authority looks for evidence of an overall ‘culture ofsafety’ when deciding whether or not to issue a licence. Problem solving, orienteering, high ropes – tree climbing, tree abseil, sky pole, low ropes course, survival skills, river study, environmentalawareness sessions, map work & navigation skills.

Staff Competence and Qualifications

Staff will either hold a relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualification or a statement of competence signed by an appropriately experienced and qualified person consistent withthe requirements of the Licensing Service. For all other activities at the centre, staff will becentre validated as per the centre’s “Freelance Validation Procedures”. All documentationregarding staff validations and qualifications is available for inspection on site.

Health and Safety and Risk Assessments

Risk Assessments for activities are inspected, updated and monitored as part of our Adventure Activities Licence. These are available for inspection at the centre.All other premises related Health and Safety Regulations and Risk Assessments are inaccordance with Lancashire County Council’s Health and Safety regulations.

Fire Protection

All fire fighting equipment is monitored, checked and serviced in accordance with LABGC Guidelines.

Child Protection

Our policy is consistent with current good practice in this area and meets current statutoryrequirements. All establishment staff are trained in child protection issues. Disclosure &Barring Service (DBS) checks are carried out on all staff.

Supervision when not on activities

Visiting group leaders oversee group supervision when not on activities.Centre guidelines and procedures are available to visiting leaders upon arrival at the centre.

Health and Safety Induction.

Emergency call-out procedures Ormside Mill operates a cascade system which is linked to LABGC’a call out system. A copy of these procedures is in the visiting staffhandbook which is described in the induction procedures on course arrival.

Transport

Prior arrangement can be made for transport to and from certain activities.

Type of Transport: 17 seat minibuses (booking required), 1 x 3 seat van

All vehicles comply with current legislation, are fitted with 3 point seat belts and areroutinely maintained by LABGC & Ormside Mill.

Drivers: All minibus drivers hold a current D1 licence endorsement and MiDAS certificate.

Equipment

All specialist equipment is provided for the activities and will be fit for purpose asinspected in line with as part of our adventure activity licence.
