SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS

FOR

(Standard No - 60335-2-34,Edition - 6,Issue/Revised Date - 11/3/2017 )

(Standard Title- Household and Similar Electrical Appliances –

Safety – Part 2-34: Particular Requirements for Motor-Compressors)

This document is derived from the following Standard Development Organization (SDO) bulletin(s) or other documentation publicly available to UL subscribers:

Standard Development Organization (SDO) / Document Type
(proposal, bulletin, etc) / Document Designation / Date
UL / Proposed Bulletins / Subject 60335-2-34 / March 24 and July 7, 2017
Primary motivator for the Standards revision / Harmonization
CCNs Impacted / SLEX2/8, SLIS2/8, SLKQ2, SLLG2/8, SLLX2/8, SLNU2, SOLI

The following is a summary of the revised/new certification requirements.

[ X ] Action is Not Required for current certified products and the new/revised certification requirements will be applied in evaluation of the new and revised products effective November 3, 2017.

[ ] Action is Required for current certified products to comply with the new/revised certification requirements and previous Action Not Required certification requirements, if any, as list in this document.

Section Paragraph Clause / Summary of requirements
IEC-Based Reqts. (Clause reference in bold) / A number of changes have been made due to the “upgrading” of this Standard, which is now based on IEC 60335-2-34, Edition 5.2. The “upgrades” to the new IEC 5.2 Edition include the following:
  • Manufacturer is required to declare the type of motor-protection being used - Cl. 6.103
  • Fault testing is now required of motor-compressor electronic circuits - Cl. 19.11.2
  • Testing requires short-circuiting of motor-compressor contactors and relays - Cl. 19.14
  • Updating of Minimum test pressures tables - Tables 101 & 102
  • Updating of Running Overload Test - Annex AA
  • Requires compatibility testing of insulating materials, oils and refrigerants – Annex BB and Annex CC
Motor-compressors being evaluated to this new 6th Edition will need to be tested to determine compliance with the new IEC-based requirements.
19.101.ADV.5 / Provides the method for determining Max Rated Current (MRC) for electronically controlled or protected motor-compressors. All electronically controlled or protected motor-compressors will now need to be subjected to this test.
19.105DV / Outlines an alternate (and simpler) test method for conducting the primary single phase test. Only applies to 3-Phase motor-compressors and permits an alternate path of compliance.
22.102DV / Requires determination of minimum leakage rate for motor-compressors for use with flammable refrigerants (A2 or A3) and limits leakage to 3 gm/year. This test specifies the need for a mass spectrometer for conducting the test.
30.101DV(b) / Provides the method for testing a nonmetallic enclosure as part of the end-use motor-compressor. The prior (5th) edition did not allow nonmetallic materials to be tested using end-product parts. This clause in the 6th edition should enable easier testing of the nonmetallic enclosure materials.
30.102DV / Specifies the test requirements for motor compressor starting devices that are of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) type. Any PTC type starting device will need to be subjected to this test (unless previously subjected to this test as part of a “preselection” evaluation).
Annex 101.DVG / Outlines an optional “hydrostatic strength test” which is an alternate to the pressure testing in 22.7 and permits an alternate path of compliance.
Annex 101.DVI / Specifies requirements for “high-voltage” motor-compressors (rated 601 - 15,000 V).
Annex 101.DVK / Provides the test method and description of “motorettes/coilettes”. This test offers an alternate compliance path instead of the present “twisted pairs” wiring tests specified in Annex BB.
