SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES

Automotive Parts Washer

DO NOT use this equipment unless a teacher has instructed

you in its safe use and operation and has given permission.

Safety glasses must be worn at all times in work areas. / Long and loose hair must be contained.
Appropriate footwear with substantial uppers must be worn. / Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn.
Rings and jewellery must not be worn. / Wear protective gloves when operating this equipment as identified in MSDS.

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

1.  Ensure parts washer tank using combustible or flammable solvents is equipped with an approved automatic lid closure device (i.e. fusible link) that allows the lid to close automatically in the event of a fire, and also allows manual closure if required.

2.  Ensure electrical wiring and light fixtures attached or near to parts washer using combustible or flammable solvents are sound and in good condition. Flexible power extension cords must not be run near the tank.

3.  Consult the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for specific technical data and precautionary measures concerning any materials used with this equipment.

4.  Ensure adequate ventilation.

5.  Ensure no slip/trip hazards are present in workspaces and walkways.

6.  Check there are no naked flames or ignition sources.

7.  Familiarise yourself with and check all equipment operations and controls.

8.  Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect machinery.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

1.  Be aware of other personnel in the immediate vicinity and ensure the area is clear before starting equipment.

2.  Use correct lifting procedures.

3.  Clean up spills immediately. Do not leave dirty rags/parts/tools lying around.

4.  Never leave the equipment running while unattended.

5.  Keep lid closed when not in use.

6.  Wash hands with soap and water after every use.

HOUSEKEEPING

1.  Switch off the equipment and ensure lid is closed.

2.  Leave the work area in a safe, clean and tidy state.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS

n Electric shock n Degreasing fluid n Sharp edges and burrs n Manual Handling

FORBIDDEN

n No hot work (i.e. welding, grinding or open flames) operations are allowed in the same area/room where the parts washer is located
