Safeguarding Week Activities

Safeguarding Week ran from the 27th of November to the 1st of December.

West Sussex County Council

Safeguarding Adults Unit

-Safeguarding Adults Best Practice day (had speakers from Clinical Commissioning Group, SAB, WSCC and Multi-Agency SH)

Care and Business Support Team

-in partnership with SAB did Hearts and Tarts – cakes and tarts for pledges

-in partnership with Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had a workshop

-Safeguarding Adults Board collected 31 pledges from the Safe Journeys workshop

The Business Support Team and Safeguarding Adult Board raised awareness in Centenary House, Worthing, asking people to help keep safeguarding personal by making a pledge in exchange for a cake and an opportunity to talk about what people do. 80 pledges were made from Centenary House

Learning and Development Team

-supporting Care and Business Team and Safeguarding Adults Unit to organise safeguarding training through safeguarding week

-had a stall at Arun District Council Safeguarding Awareness event

Safeguarding Adult Hubs/Locality Team

-George Grant from Adult Arun Locality Team and Service spoke at Arun District Council

-Displayed safeguarding materials and made a hub pledge.

Trading Standards

-A stall at Arun District Council

Connect to Support Team

-Speaking at Arun District Council: “Introduction to Connect to Support Service”

-Had a stall at Arun District Council

Community Safety Team

-Several events through Safeguarding Week:

  • Reducing Risks of Radicalisation Workshop
  • Serious & Organised Crime Briefing
  • Staying Safe Online Session for Older People
  • Community Surgery (focus on Internet Safety)

Libraries

  • Displayed safeguarding materials

Fire Service

  • Stand at Arun District Council
  • Gave a couple of talks on support for adults at risk
  • Social media support

Cabinet members

  • Debbie Kennard – visits around the county viewing safeguarding week events and retweets
  • Louise Goldsmith - retweets

West Sussex County Council Communications Team

  • Had a website to promote Safeguarding Week

Clinical Commission Groups

  • The Board sent safeguarding week packages to all the GPs across all three Clinical Commissioning Groups in West Sussex
  • The Clinical Commissioning Groups themselves had displays in their buildings

Western Hospital

Western Hospital did a joint event with the Care and Business Support Team had a “Have a safe journey” event with their safeguarding champions. They also shared lots of updates across social media support

Queen Victoria Hospital Foundation Trust

  • Queen Victoria Hospital promoted their newly developed safeguarding cards for staff to make sure they were aware of their safeguarding responsibilities.
  • There were also Safeguarding Week displays to increase patient awareness.

Sussex Police

  • Materials were distributed across all their stations and hubs in West Sussex
  • Andy Baynes, Sussex Police: Cuckooing: what it is/red flags/partnership approach
  • Bernie Lawrie, Sussex Police: Op Staple – Vulnerable people fraud & financial abuse

Arun District Council

Held a Safeguarding Awareness event that took place on the 30th of November, over 140 people attended the event with 210 attending the presentations. Safeguarding Adults Board had a stall there and collected 52 Pledges from Arun District Council staff and a few councillors. This event was also supported by social media.

Care Homes

Majorie Cobby House

  • Spoke to people in the care home about their safety and wellbeing and this was made into an activity which was then decorated shared with staff and displayed.
  • Staff made pledges on what they were going to do around safeguarding on the wooden hearts, which were hung on an ornamental tree. Safeguarding materials were shared and spoken about by staff.

Compton House

  • Social media throughout Safeguarding Week.
  • Staff made pledges to safeguarding
  • Staff spoke to residents about what made them feel safe, share with their key worker and record it.
  • Safeguarding Champion shared her recent course with other staff
