Safe Working including Fire, First Aid and Lone Working

Fire

Llanwrtyd & District Heritage & Arts Centre(LDHAC) has smoke detectors fitted and emergency lighting. Should you hear the fire alarm (a continuous siren), usher all visitors and leave the building immediately by the nearest exit and assemble on the Belle Vue car park to await roll call.

If you discover a fire in the Heritage & Arts Centre, operate the nearest fire alarm call point by breaking the glass, usher all visitors and immediately leave the premises by the nearest exit. As above, assemble on the Belle Vue car park to await roll call.

Dial 999 for the Emergency Services.

DO NOT WASTE TIME TRYING TO PUT OUT THE FIRE AND ENDANGER YOUR OWN AND OTHER’S LIVES.

On leaving the building close all doors behind you.

Do not re-enter the building until advised to do so by the Fire Officer.

If a fire breaks out whilst you are in someone’s home, leave the building immediately and seek a place of safety. Advise the person you are with to leave the building, and if that person is elderly and/or infirm, assist them to a place of safety, far enough away should there be an explosion.

Using Computers

Ensure that the chair and work station you are using are comfortable and causing you no musculoskeletal strain. If need be, speak with theProject Manager or any of the Trustees to see what adjustments can be made.

Check also that you do not suffer from eye strain from staring at the monitor for too long and ensure the monitor is not too bright and is at the correct height for you.

To help prevent any problems that might arise, take frequent breaks from working at the computer, say 10 minutes every hour. These don’t have to be long breaks, but just a few minutes to make a drink, have a stroll outside or do some little stretching exercises. Circle your wrists to help prevent repetitive strain syndrome, squeeze your eyes shut and/or do some blinking frequently to ease any eye strain.

Lone Working

LDHAC wants to ensure its volunteers are safe at all times, especially when visiting the home of someone whom they do not know. You should be aware of the following:

Safe Working continued:

  • The person you are visiting might well have animals that are not necessarily friendly or under control.
  • The person might not be alone when you visit, and although you might consider yourself safe with the homeowner, you might not know the other person.
  • Alternatively, the person you are visiting might not be at home when you arrive and someone else lets you in and asks you to wait.

If you encounter someone who is aggressive, leave the person’s home quietly and report the matter to your Team Leader, Project Manager or Trustee.

Always let someone know when you are making a visit on behalf of LDHAC. Give your Voluntary Team Leader or Project Manager the following information:

  • Name and address of the person you are visiting
  • Reason for the visit
  • Date and time of the visit
  • How long you expect your visit to be
  • A mobile number if you have one

Let the person with whom you left the information know when the visit has finished.

Working with children, young people and vulnerable adults

LDHAC will not routinely work with children, young people or vulnerable adults. We do however have a Safeguarding Policy in place to comply with PAVO membership, and for occasions when a young person wishes to volunteer with the group. Young people who volunteer with the group would work in the Heritage Centre where they would be in the presence of more than one adult, or in their own home where they would work on the laptop computer. Please ask to see this policy if you are a young person volunteering with the group or if you are a volunteer who is being asked to work with young people. All our policies and procedure are now on our website.
