Safe Work Procedure

1 / Inspect Disc Sander / a) Replace abrasive belts that are worn, frayed or excessively worn in spots--b) Do not operate Belt Sander unless adequately guarded. Replace/ repair guards as necessary.--
2 / Install/replace abrasive belt / a) Disconnect Belt Sander from its power source and ensure motor switch is off--b) Install an abrasive belt that is the same width as the pulley-drum. Adjust abrasive belt tension to keep the belt running the same speed as the pulley-drum.--c) Use correct tool for installing/adjusting abrasive belt. Wear recommended gloves--d) Wear recommended gloves when handling abrasive belt
3 / Adjust work rest / a) Work rest spacing should be calibrated to <1/8th (0.125) inches from face of abrasive belt. Ensure work rest is secured to support workpiece--b) Use correct tool for adjusting work rest. Wear recommended gloves.
4 / Transport workpiece to Belt Sander / a) Wear recommended gloves when handling workpiece--b) Use mechanical lifting device or get assistance from co-worker--c) Clean/clear work area/surfaces of unused tools/material. Remove dust/debris regularly--d) Wear recommended footwear
5 / Start Belt Sander / a) Do not have workpiece in contact with abrasive belt before pushing start button--b) Ensure no hair, loose clothing or jewellery is near the point of operation--c) Check that keys/wrenches used for adjusting/installing are removed from Belt Sander before pushing start button
6 / Sand workpiece / a) Keep hand/fingers at a safe distance from abrasive belt. Use a jig or holding device to sand small workpieces. Avoid awkward operations and hand positions where a sudden slip could cause hands/fingers to move into abrasive belt. Wear recommended gloves.--b) Use safety eyewear and/or face shield--c) Use local exhaust ventilation and/or wear recommended respiratory protection--d) Tie hair back. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery while ope---rating Belt Sander
7 / Conclude sanding / a) Push machine stop button and wait for abrasive belt to stop before removing debris. Use a stick or brush to remove debris.--b) Wear recommended gloves and avoid handling workpiece by machined end--c) Do not leave Belt Sander running unattended. Push machine stop button after each use.--
