“HIS WORD TODAY” by Rev. William J. Reilly
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 29, 2017
“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth, who have observed his law; seek justice, seek humility; perhaps you may be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger. But I will have as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly… How blest are the poor in spirit…”
How many people we know who spend their time pursuing what they do not have. Those without work read the want ads, write lengthy resumes and
try to connect with someone to help them. Those with health issues look for a second opinion or find a specialist to address their needs. Young people
look to guidance counselors at school to assist them in making a career choice.
But how few of us earnestly and eagerly seek the Lord. We presume God’s presence, but how rarely do we set out to strengthen our relationship with Him. Do I work for justice, am I humble and dependent before the Lord? The Lord asks me to ‘act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly before my God.’
The Beatitudes in the gospel today will help us to see our lives as the Lord looks upon us, not in anger but with love. I want to be poor in spirit, putting God first. I want to be humble, work for justice, walk the way of holiness and care for those in need. All disciples are called to be people of the beatitudes and look for ways to put them into practice.
Enjoy Grocery Shopping?

Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey’s House Calls for Groceries (HCG) provides grocery shopping assistance on a weekly or biweekly basis to homebound residents in Morris County. Once matched, volunteers contact the HCG client to schedule a mutually convenient time to grocery shop. Volunteers visit the client’s home to pick up the shopping list, and payment for the groceries. Then, the volunteer will shop at a local grocery store, deliver the groceries to the client’s home and assist with putting items away. This is a great opportunity for professionals, retirees and students who are looking for ways to create meaningful relationships with neighbors. For more information, please contact Rachel Enderle, Volunteer Coordinator, at 973-451-4128 or .
Are You a Devotional
Candle Lighter?
If you light a candle for a loved one once a week or more often, may we offer you another way of honoring that individual? In our Crucifix Chapel (as you enter church, on your right you will see the Crucifix) we have devotional candles, that, once lighted, burn continually for one year. Below each candle is a plaque with a person or family imprinted on it, including the name of the person offering the candle. Each candle burns at a cost of $100.00 per year. Interested?
