Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee

Minutes of Meeting for April 25, 2017

Lupton Hall Room 158

Present:

Amit Bandyopadhyay (Chair), Monica Caravella, April Lynne Earle (Secretary), Jing Feng, Michael Figuccio, Peter Greco, Chunhui Yu.

Absent:

Darleyne Mayers, Luisa Nappo-Dattoma (FEC Liaison).

●Amit Bandyopadhyay called the meeting to order at 11:04 a.m.

●Approval of Minutes:

○The Minutes for the meeting held on February 21, 2017 were approved.

○April will submit those Minutes to Kathy Coley via email.

●Review of Final Approval of the Committee’s Recommendations:

○Amit informed the Committee that the applicant for sabbatical, which the Committee supported, was granted by the administration.

○At the February meeting two applications for reduced load were tabled; candidate two and candidate three.

  • Friday, February 24, 2017: Through email communication the Committee has decided to support the second candidate’s application for reduced load following clarification of support from the Department Chair.
  • Monday March 6, 2017: Through email communication the Committee commented that the third candidate’s reply was still not substantial and decided not to support the application which Amit forwarded to the Provost’s Office.

○Amit also informed the Committee that 6 of the 8 applications for reduced load were granted, each receiving 1 course load reduction. There was one reversal of our recommendations:

  • Candidate number two, who the Committee supported in receiving a course load reduction for the Fall of 2017, was not granted a reduction.
  • There is still no word from the administration regarding candidate number three’s application.The Committee did not support a course load reduction for the candidate inFall of 2017. Amit did, however, contact the candidate’s chair so that they would be prepared for the candidate to resubmit an application next semester.

○Amit read to the Committee a standard letter the candidate receives when he/she is denied a reduced load.

○A motion was made, seconded, and approved by the Committee for Amit to contact the Provost to inquire as to the reasons for denying two candidates’ applications for reduced load that committee had recommended earlier. This request is based on an interest to understand the logic and use it appropriately in future deliberation for committee’s recommendations.

●Election of Chair for 2017-2018:

○Michael Figuccio nominated himself to fill the role of Chair of the Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee for academic year 2017-2018.

○The Committee voted and Michael was unanimously named Chair.

○Amit will forward his Committee files to Michael.

○April will also forward her past minutes to Michael.

○Chunhui Yu nominated himself to the role of Secretary of the Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee for academic year 2017-2018.

○Election of the Secretary will take place at the first meeting of the Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee 2017-2018, when all newly elected members should be present.

○No date was set for the next meeting.
