Dear Neighbors,

Summer Reading: We’re gearing up!It’s time once again for our New York State Summer Reading Program that runs the month of July; this year’s theme is Build a Better World. We’ve planned lots of activities and fun around this theme in order to entice everyone to keep reading during summer vacation. This keeps children “ready to learn” when they return to school in the fall, and enforces great reading habits in all of us. We have prizes for all age levelsdonated by local businesses and the Friends of the Library; select the programs that interest you and your family from the list below, and call to register in advance because some programs fill up very quickly!

MCLS Technology Updates

  • Classic Catalogue:If you are a user of the Monroe County Library System’s “Classic Catalogue” please be aware that it will be discontinued by the software company this summer. At that point you will have to use “CataloguePlus” which is already available to you.The latter is a much more visual and user-friendly version of the catalogue, and is currently the default catalogue when most users log in to the MCLS web site. If you would like help navigating CataloguePlus, please stop in and ask a staff member, or call me for an appointment for individualized training.
  • Overdrive Magazine Collection: Overdrive, our digital book platform,is discontinuing its Nook Magazines Collection for e-reader devices. As our subscriptions expire we will lose access to many of our digital magazine and newspaper titles. Overdriveis working on a new digital magazine platform of its own- we’ll alert you when it’s ready. We regret any inconvenience this has caused you. In the meantime, come to the library for our regular copies of circulating magazines- we have many choices for all ages.
  • Smartphone App Update: Monroe County Library System has a brand-new app called MCLS-To-Goand it’s available now for a free download from your app store. The app has a cool feature- it can store your library card barcode. If you have the old app (called MCLS Mobile) go ahead and delete that after you download the new one, because the old app is being discontinued. MCLS-To-Go looks like this:

As always, we are here to help if you need it.

  • Text Messaging Feature: We have the ability to send smartphone texts for your 3-Day Courtesy Reminders and Hold Alerts. Call us or stop by the circulation desk to sign up for this feature. (If you pay for your texts, normal rates will apply.)

V.I.P. Museum Passes: We have partnered with several local museums & arts organizations for a programthat allows you to check out a pass with your library card, and then receive a discounted admission rate when you arrive. We have passes for Genesee Country Village, The George Eastman Museum, Rochester Museum & Science Center, Memorial Art Gallery, The Susan B. Anthony House, Geva Theater, and more. So if you have company coming for a visit, come check out a pass for a week before you head out to these museums, and enjoy them at a discount, courtesy of your library.

Holiday Closings: We will be closed:

  • Memorial Day Weekend:Saturday, May 27- Monday, May 29th
  • Independence Day:Tuesday July 4th
  • Firemen’s Parade: Closing early at 5:00 PM on Friday, July 14th

Remember, our items are never due on a day we are scheduled to be closed. Check your receipt or online account to verify all of your due dates.

Looking forward to seeing you…

Kirsten
