Lab Clean-up

Over the next few months we will be conducting various experimental activities. Some will be complex; others simple but all will require clean-up at the conclusion of each exercise. Organized clean-up is necessary to leave the lab in appropriate conditions for the classes which follow us. Not only is this an issue of respecting those who follow, it is also a safety consideration. Lab safety and cleanliness go hand in hand. As a result, each student will be responsible for tasks related to cleanliness.

Rule #1: IF YOU MAKE A MESS, YOU SHOULD CLEAN IT UP.

When cleaning your lab bench area, remove all solids and place them in the garbage. Use soap and water at the sink only to wash after discarding solids in the garbage. Hang any clean glass ware on the drying racks.

Take all dirty glassware to the dishwasher. Scalpels and forceps (tweezers) go in the silverware tray. Blunt metal probes get laid on the top shelf. Scissors should go on the top shelf looped around the pins on the top rack. Small glassware goes on the top rack. Large glassware goes on the bottom.

Wipe your counter top down with soap and water.

Rule #2: A CLEAN LAB IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY.

If everyone cleans up his/her own mess, the following jobs will be easy. Ultimate responsibility for the cleanliness of the assigned area lies with the individual listed.

Sinks – drains in sinks must be free from solid debris so that water drains easily. Wash with soap and rinse. The sink next to the dishwasher is #1, sink #2 is in the middle, and sink #3 is at the front of the room. Sink #4 is the front lab sink.

Dishes – clean dishes should be stored in the proper cabinet. The first person is primarily responsible for clean dishes. Dirty dishes should be placed in the appropriate rack. Small glassware goes on the top shelf. Scalpels and forceps (tweezers) can be placed in the silverware rack. If you have questions, ask. The second person is primarily responsible for dirty dishes. This responsibility should be shared, however.

Hood – make sure that hood area is clean of any debris. Hood door should be 2/3 down.

Drying racks- Drying racks #1, #2, and #3, are above sinks #1, #2, and #3. Students on drying rack duty should put any dry materials away, and make sure that wet materials are clean and hung properly.

Counters – Students assigned counter duty are to make sure that counters are clean, and to wipe them down if needed. Counters are assigned as: sinks (side of lab), front lab area, row #1, row #2, row #3, and row #4 (back row).

In the event that a student is absent, the next student on the list assumes the absentee’s job responsibility.
