1Definition

Specific design is a design that ensures compliance with the Building Act 2004 when the construction requirements of a building deviates from, or is beyond the scope of recognised industry standards (New Zealand Standards, Australia/New Zealand Standards, British Standards and other published standards that govern the construction industry).

2Credit for this unit standard indicates compliance with industry practice. Industry practice refers to the ability to demonstrate knowledge that reflects the uniformity, finish quality and material economies currently accepted within industry.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Explain the requirements for the construction of pile foundations.

Performance criteria

1.1Types of piles are identified in terms of their use.

Rangeanchor, braced, cantilever, driven, ordinary.

1.2Methods of calculating quantities of material required for pile foundations are described, and accurate sample calculations performed in accordance with industry practice.

1.3Placement of piles is described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

Rangeline, level and plumb, height, centres, requirements of the sub-floor bracing schedule.

1.4Provision for permanent fixings to different pile types is described in accordance with the NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

1.5Provision for ventilation is described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

Element 2

Explain the purpose, requirements and construction methods for bearers, stringers and bracing used in pile foundations.

Performance criteria

2.1The purpose and requirements of bearers and stringers are described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

2.2The methods of installing bearers and stringers are described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

2.3The purpose and requirements of sub-floor bracing are described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

2.4Bracing methods are described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
