School Notes Wednesday 9 March 2016
Rugby Cap - Dean Roger from this year’s S6 (Moray House) has won his first International Cap, playing for the Scotland U-18 team against England U-18 last Sunday ( March 6th ) in Stirling. Dean, who started his playing career with Moray moved to Highland in Inverness so that he could play in the national leagues and so gain more experience. Whilst a student at ElginAcademy this session, Dean raised, organised and coached the school 1st XV, participating in the Moray schools league. We are very proud of Dean’s hard work and achievement and wish Dean every success with his future rugby career.
Study Support Options – A very wide range of lunchtime and after-school study support options is available to students in S4, S5 and S6 as they prepare for the final exams in May. Pleasesee the front page of the school website for details.
ScottishSpaceSchool – Congratulations to Aimal Ahmad Khan (S5), who has been successful in being selected for ScottishSpaceSchool. With only 100 palces, and over 300 applicants, this is a great achievement.
Book Awards - A group of us attended The Scottish Children’s Book Awards 16 Ceremony in Glasgow last week. We had a very early start, leaving Elgin at 5.30am, but it was worth it, to meet the shortlisted authors and to hear about their books. We learned about the authors’ inspirations and it was good to put faces to names. The Q&A and interaction with the authors was great, but the best part was seeing our own Marcus Huby receive his prize for the book review competition and cheering him on. We enjoyed being part of SCBA16 and we also enjoyed the range of tasks in school, based around the books. S3 pupils: Hollie, Zoe, Katharine, Kirsty, Fergus, Marcus, Lewis, Cameron and Gregor.
Football Success – Congratulations to our Senior Boys Football team, who have won the Moray Schools League this year. Well done!
Staff News – Congratulations to Claire Reynolds, who has been appointed as Teacher of Modern Languages. Mrs Reynolds currently works at GordonstounSchool. Welcome back to the school to Ivor Salvage, who will be covering Mrs Chapman’s absence in PE over the next three months.
Filmtastic Pupils - S3 pupils Tom Jenkins, Harry Allen and Jack Wiseman have been highly commended by Scottish Book Trust for their book trailer in The Scottish Children’s Book Awards 2016 competition. The panel felt that the boys’ trailer captured the atmosphere of the book extremely well and that their use of cinematography and sound were excellent. This trailer is now available to view on the website A second book trailer from ElginAcademy caught the judges’ eyes: Kirsty Anderson’s film was noted as being a really strong entry, which stood apart from many others in its approach. Congratulations to our Fantastic Four and well done to all our S3 Scottish Book Awards pupils for their hard work throughout this collaborative Library and English department project.
House Assemblies – The final round of House Assemblies for the session has been taking place this week. Each of these has been led by our talented team of Heads and Depute Heads of House.
Sports Personality of the year 2016- Last year we established the first ever Elgin Academy Sports Personality of the Year Awrad, which was won by Sophia Green. This year, pupils must apply to be considered for this prestigious award and the winner will be decided by a whole school vote. You are eligible to apply if you compete in any sporting activity at regional, national or international level. You are also eligible to apply if you give up lots of time to coach sports to others. The closing date for entries is Friday 18th March so make sure yours is in on time!!
Eco code Competition - The S6 Eco Committee would like to get all ElginAcademy pupils involved in competition to design an eco-code for the school. The eco code design should have a motto which is short, snappy and to the point. The code should indicate what it means for the school to be eco-friendly, and mustmention the importance of reducing litter. The best entry will be chosen as the eco-code for our school, it will be displayed on the eco notice board and notice boards around the school. There will be a prize for the winner too! All entries should go to Mrs Shaw or the drop box in the library by the end of term.
